Beastly Mage

Asuma Sarutobi

Today's card is a version of Asuma that can help you out a bit. He's a turn 4 version, with nice stats in Healthy and the "12 Shinobi Guardians" characteristic. Now, once he hits the field, you can look for one Ninja card in your deck that includes "Shikamaru Nara" in the name. If you're familiar with the B&G reprints from the last set of tins, then you know that the Shikamaru/Asuma Platoon was reprinted there, and that Platoon is a valid target for this effect. Also, remember that you can Platoon this Asuma, and then Squad that Platoon. Simple, but effective. In Limited he's good, even with a lack of targets in that format. In Constructed, he's great for Earth decks. Trust me on that one.

08/24/10 N-823 Asuma Sarutobi [For The Next Generation]

Today's card is one of the best cards in the game right now, at least for Earth (and somewhat for Wind). First off, he's a T4 Asuma, but with a different stat pool than previous Asuma's on T4. He used to be 5/2 and 3/1, but [FTNG] has 6/2 and 2/0. Personally, I like this better since you wil most likely be using him as your head ninja anyway and you won't be using him in injured since 3/1 on T4+ won't get you anywhere. His characteristics are all "meh", except the always useful Jonin and Weapon Combat Attribute. Now here is the great part of this Asuma: his effect.

His effect let's you take any card with "Shikamaru Nara" in its name from your deck into your hand. The obvious combo here is to take the "Shikamaru Nara & Asuma Sarutobi" platoon that was reprinted in the set 16 tins. Play the platoon, then simply squad it into the powerful Shikamau/Asuma squad. The platoon has a handy effect of allowing you to look at all of your opponent's battle rewards and adding one of them to your hand when it wins any victory or is removed from play. The act of squading it will trigger the effect so you can get a free card out of it.

Basically, this Asuma is an auto-squad into one of the best cards in the game and it gives you a free card from your opponent's BRs when it does so. A great card, in my opinion.

Limited: 2/5 Good stats for it's drop, but the effect is much harder to use and not as good.
Constructed: 4.5/5
Block: 4.5/5 The main combo with this card is block legal.
