Alucard of the Abyss

Today we get to number 7 on the top ten cards of '07 and it's one that has been making quite an impact since his release in the Quest for Power starter decks. Today's card is The First Hokage [One Who Created The Village]. And what a card to review.

First off, as with all Hokage he is a turn 6 ninja with amazing stats like any other Hokage. Next up is his ever so powerful effect. His effect literally turns the game around when he comes into play. He reduces the amount of Battle Rewards your opponents have down to 4 if they have 5 or more when he drops. The effect is incredible and something Earth has been needing for a while now, a 6 drop that makes Earth that much more playable. Next to pre-errata The Third Hokage [Addressing Past Wrongs] and the QfP starter The Second Hokage, his effect is the most powerful of the Hokage and of 6 drops in the game in general. The most popular card combo involving this is with yesterday's card Secret Wood Style: Deep Forest Creation. With the effect of The First combined with Deep Forest Creation it creates a complete turn around of the game (if you're on the losing end) and puts you at a game winning position. Another thing this card has done has pretty much put a stop to decks meant to get early Battle Rewards as quick as possible such as Tempo and Rush decks.

In Limited should you be building decks from starters than choose him first and build a deck around him as best you can. His stats alone warrant playing him in this format but his effect is also a very powerful tool in this format. That combination means he is a top card for this format.

Constructed: 4.5/5 (Meta shaping cards deserve this high of a rating)
Limited: 5/5 (should be a first choice if you have the Earth to support him)

Tomorrow we look at the number 6 card of 2007, a card that dominated top tournaments and locals for the better half of 07 when it came out. Stay tuned!
