Asuma Sarutobi: Barbecue

This card's downfall is in that the team of genin has to be sent out to attack. By the time you have Asuma out, you won't have many all-genin teams with comparable attack to your opponent's teams, or at least not for long; there are better Asumas and better ways to draw a card.

Asuma Sarutobi [BBQ]
Leaf/Jonin/Male/Earth
Turn Cost 4
Combat/Support: 5/2, 3/1 injured

Effect: Valid: If your team of only Genin ninjas is sent out to attack and is defeated, completely defeated, or draws, you can draw 1 card.

Today we have a pretty solid turn 4 Jonin for Earth, Asuma Sarutobi. Being a 5/2 on turn 4 is pretty darn good, and with an effect that is useful outside of a specific deck, it gives Shikaku Nara a run for his money. Asuma's effect can be nice, but it would've been more useful earlier in the game, as Turn 4 tends to the time that Genin are already out of the fight and Jonins are taking over. Still, I could see some interesting Genin rush decks that could use Asuma as backup, since it presents a slight predicament to those who think of blocking the flurry of Genins, since you could then draw more cards. That deck type is fairly rare, though, so this card's effect is up in the air right now. I think that simply including this as a solid non-hand cost Asuma would add some nice beef to any Earth Deck.

Beastly Mage

Asuma Sarutobi (n124)

Barbecue?! Wait, it's a card?! Yes, Pojo-ers, there's actually a card effect with that name. LOL Asuma's stats are pretty decent. His effect is good too. Genin team gets beat = you draw a card. He's pretty good for a Genin Rush deck, though you don't see those that much. =\ At least his effect is valid, which is a plus.

N-126 Asuma Sarutobi (Element: Earth)
Leaf | Jonin | Male
Entrance Cost: 4 | Hand Cost: 0
[BARBECUE]
VALID: If your team with only "Genin" ninja(s) is sent
out to Attack and is Defeated, Completely Defeated,
or Draws, you can draw 1 card.
Healthy Stats: 5/2 | Injured Stats: 3/1 | Attribute: Weapon

Asuma is a solid earth ninja, which is nice to see once in a while. His Combat and Support are pretty standard (even sub par) for a 4 drop, but in earth decks high combat ninjas aren't always available. His effect is pretty great, effectively turning all of your Genins into draw engines. You can pitch a genin at your opponent, and if they want to block it you get a card. If they don't, or if they block with a weak ninja, that gives you an advantage. It's a win-win situation. The ratio is 1:1 or even 0:1; you injure or discard one genin to draw a card. Usually late game your injured sasukes or whatever can trade themselves in for possibly an 8 Trigrams, Third Hokage, or whatever you're looking for.

On top of this method of attacking for cards, Asuma can reward you for walking into a trap; if you're sending out strong teams of Genin (pretty typical for Tempo even on turn 4) and your opponent uses a Kunai or something to beat the team, you get to draw a card.

As a 4 drop, Asuma is great. Choza is a much bigger body but does not offer any card draw, which earth doesn't get much of anyway.

In limited, any Jonin with 5 combat and no hand cost is great. And you can pitch weak genins at your opponent for more cards, which is always helpful.

The only thing that hurts his playability is his bad injured stats and the fact that his healthy stats aren't too amazing anyway. Typically you're going to want to have your Jonins attacking, but since Asuma has to be a stand by ninja, he might hurt your agression a bit.
