Shikamaru Nara [Flexibility]
Turn Cost 1, Hand Cost 0
Leaf/Genin/Male/Growth/Mental Power 4

Combat/Support: 0/2, 0/0 Injured

Effect: While you have 5 or more cards in your hand, this Ninja's team and the team battling against this Ninja perform a mental power battle. While you have 4 or less cards in your hand, this Ninja's team and the team battling against this ninja cannot perform a mental power battle.

Super Rare

We start off an entire week of more Eternal Rivalry reviews, beginning with one of the several SR Genin ninjas in the set, Shikamaru, the resident genius ninja.

This incarnation of Shikamaru can cleverly fill two main roles in a deck. One, there is the obvious ability to have free Mental Power Battles as long as you keep a full hand. In my opinion, Shikamaru [IQ of 200 or More] fills the role better, since you can perform a battle any time you have at least 2 cards in hand, whereas this card forces you to play very few cards. IQ of 200 or More is also a Turn 0, while this is Turn 1 and you are likely to have played a couple of cards before him. The second ability may seem like a drawback, but it actually works well to disarm opposing Mental decks. Any time in the late game, you are quite likely to have 4 or fewer cards in hand. In that case, any Mental Deck is probably screwed, since you have the ultimate chump blocker in this case. In my opinion, this card wasn't worth being a super rare, I'd say its [Formation] cousin is much more powerful...

Constructed: 2.75/5 Could make a side board impact somewhere.

Limited: 2/5 Not many mental triggers to defend against here.

Beastly Mage

Shikamaru [Flexibility]

Hello there, Naruto fans. today's card is one of the new SR's from Eternal Rivalry. This Shikamaru comes with the basic stats for any turn-1 Shikamaru (0 combat, 2 support, 4 mental, growth), plus it's got a nice effect. If you have five or more cards in your hand every time you battle with this Ninja you'll perform a mental power battle. If you have four or less then the mental battles are negated. Early game this card's gonna make a lot of mental battles, probably giving you an advantage over your opponent. Late game, however, you probably won't be making much mental battles, much like when you use Naruto [Misplaced Anger], but you don't have to ditch your entire hand. It's a great card, not just in Mental decks.

Ratings:

Limited: 5/5 (use it!)
Constructed: 4/5 (no hand discard with this one)

Byakuya Kuchiki

Shikamaru Nara[Flexibiility]

Today we look at the Super Rare Shikamaru from Eternal Rivalry. Unlike his R&R version, he is a turn 1, but that makes him, I guess more balanced. He has 2 Support along with Growth, which could make him a Support of 3, which is actually pretty good. His effect makes him a Super Rare. When you have 5 or more cards in your hand, you and your opponent's team perform a Mental Power Battle. While there are 4 or less, they don't. Early on, you'll be doing Mental Battles like crazy with him because of his Wild 4 Mental Power that Shikamaru has, but the other Shikamaru[Smarty Pants] would run this guy over.
There's really no negative his effect like discarding cards to do the Mental Battle, and so forth. It's pretty easy. With Mental Decks getting a push this set, expect to see maybe 1 or 2 decks try out this Shikamaru and see how he works.

My Ratings:
Constructed: 4/5
Limited: 5/5... You'll be owning the field with Mental Power Battles
