Holy Mage, Pwyll

- #G-BT03/012EN

Date Reviewed: July 15, 2015

[AUTO](RC) Generation Break 1 (This ability is active if you have one or more face up G units in total on your (VC) or G zone):[Counter Blast (1)] When this unit attacks a vanguard, if this unit is boosted, you may pay the cost. If you do, look at three cards from the top of your deck, search for up to one card from among them, call it to (RC), and shuffle your deck.

Holy Mage, Pwyll

So here's the equivalent of Steam Fighter Amber. Pwyll here, when attacking the vanguard while being boosted on GB1, summons a new rear-guard from the top 3 cards of the deck. Simple as they come.

Unfortunately, that's basically all it does. it's not as stable as Knight of Twin Sword in allowing more attacks since it's random, so board filling it is. Hasn't even got the support to do anything else either, which sort of sucks.

A poor man's Royal Paladin answer.

So, we kick off the rest of the week by looking at the Gold Paladins of the set, and we start with the GBCBX of the group.

Now, if you look at any of my other reviews for GBCBX cards, I tend to frown on them, usually there's something better to use for the clan.  That both is and isn't the case here.  While Pwyll gets his skill off just from being boosted, he's also a touch on the slow side.  On the other hand, you get to choose one of the top three cards to call from his skill, not just the top one.  Which is nice, I suppose.

Viviane, from BT-06, is pretty similar, though she has to be boosted and hit, while Pwyll doesn't, however, Viviane works right away, Pwyll is vanilla until you stride at least once.

The best trick is to combine this or Viviane, with Pellinore, to get extra drive checks or, in the case of Viviane, get a grade 3 Vanguard while your opponent is at grade 1.

However, that being said, Pwyll isn't a bad unit by any means, for G-era Golds, it's pretty solid.  There are better GBCBX cards out there, but there are much worse.  So far, can't complain for Golds tho.
