Crusader

Ah, Severus. In base set, you were the ideal back-up. Now, you're the left-out character. Severus is great for many reasons. He can be a starter, he provides a lesson, and, he heals 7 for free once a game!

But, he's underused. Most Potions spells require discard, so he's excluded as starters. But, if you're using a pure-Potions deck, he could be a mean starter. But, if you're using it as a back-up, it takes two actions to play, and may be discarded before you even use it! Also, since it's healing, you can't heal it back to your deck!

A free heal anytime you want it and a potion power to boot. With the many new Potions cards not requiring you to discard lessons to play, Snape got even better. You can add healing, heavier spells, and/or items by just using Snape as your starter or as your back up if your opponent doesn't already have him out.

Snape was probably the first most used starter in Base Set. Then people figured out that you had to have potion lessons to discard for your cool potion spells. So Snape was out, and Flitwick stepped in. In this environment, these were the only two characters that gave you 1 extra power starting the game. If you play a potions deck without needing to discard potion lessons, this guy is great. Heals 7 cards back to your deck and provides 1 Potions power for you. Although most decks now-a-days would be using McGonagall, Snape was very effective during his reign.

Snuffles

A lot of people don't really like Professor Severus Snape because most Potion spells require you to sacrifice a lesson. Yet, he is not to be underestimated. There are some good healers nowadays that don't make you lose a lesson and some powerful spells also. i.e. Potions Exam and Potions Class Disaster. His seven card heal is also not to be underestimated. His ability is not as game applicable as some of the other characters. However, it can come in extremely handy when the game gets close. I'd say he is probably an underused character with lots of potential.
