Hello Pojo Fans,

Hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it…best way to describe Zoodiac Drident for me.

Who wasn’t the victim of Drident back in the days when she was legal? Not the short one list stint we just saw (who didn’t see her getting banned again?) but back when Zoodiac were winning everything. Summon any Zoodiac that originates in the Main Deck, Xyz climb (getting each Xyz monster’s effect(s) along the way), then Xyz into Drident with six or so materials…good luck. She may only be able to target face-up cards, but that meant unless you stopped it with a negation you were going to be losing a card. The only saving grace to Drident was it didn’t gain ATK/DEF from Xyz Zoodiac cards since they were all ?/?, otherwise you’d face an OTK every turn she stayed on the field. If you didn’t have Effect Veiler you hoped you had a battle trap or a Solemn Strike or Skill Drain to help you with this mess. She isn’t “balanced” because she can’t target face-down cards or because it is only “once per turn” or because the ATK/DEF gain is only Main Deck Zoodiac monsters, it is still a broken card, evident from it being brought back to Limited status for one list and banned the next.

Despite likely low ATK/DEF, Drident is too good even with all the negation nowadays. They thought they could bring it back, but nope, still busted even at once per turn and only face-up cards…that shows how powerful she really is.

Art-4/5 Fun Fact: Didn’t know she was female until recently. Hated the card so much I never payed attention to it, lol.

Well the timing of this couldn’t be more spot on without being the date of the F/L list dropping. Today we got a card that was banned during the prime era of Zoodiac only to come back sometime last year and get banned once again in July of 2021, whether it was the right call or not. From Raging Tempest, we have Zoodiac Drident.

Drident is a Rank 4 EARTH Beast-Warrior with ? ATK and DEF. ATK and DEF is based on the original ATK and DEF of Zoodiac monsters attached to this, so it can vary, but it has EARTH and Beast-Warrior going for it, which is good. This requires 4 Level 4 monsters to summon, which is too much of an investment when once per turn you can instead slap Drident on top of any other Zoodiac monster as material, not just an Xyz Monster. The fact any Normal Summon can become a Drident with several materials is pretty good, or not even a Normal Summon with Zoodiac Barrage, which got limited once Drident initially came back. The lone effect that’s unique to Drident vs the other Zoodiac Xyzs is a once per turn Quick Effect to detach a material from this card to target and destroy a face-up card on the field. Overall good and quick removal on a Rank 4, especially one you at the very least could access using 2 Level 4s with Zoodiac Chakanine or Broadbull if the latter ever came back. Probably the best interruption effect on a Rank 4 yet, which is a reason it initially got banned. Now it might be because of it being able to pop Ramram to revive another Zoodiac Xyz to make Number F0: Utopic Draco Future with greatest of ease. I don’t know if that was truly broken, but it was a good combo. The main issue in Zoodiac was probably the fact they could use Boarbow to get to Zeus with the greatest of ease, which makes me wish Boarbow took the hit instead if we aren’t hitting Zeus yet. I don’t know if Drident warranted the ban, Zoodiac alone was fine, it’s the Tri-Brigade variants that are most successful I believe. I guess the TCG just wanted to copy the OCG on this one to give a slap on the wrist to Tri-Brigade, but hopefully we can get Drident back again soon. I like the card, it especially isn’t as degenerate with Zoodiac not at full power, unlike our other friend Broadbull.

Art: 4/5 The Zoodiacs have a charm to them and Ms. Drident here is no exception.

My #3: Zoodiac Drident

Zoodiacs are SO much fun…even if Drident happens to be Banned.  Earth/Beast-Warrior, Rank 4, ?/? attack and defense and needing 4 generic Level 4s for an XYZ Summon.  So naturally, 4 Material for an investment is either going to make you scoff and walk off, or be really intrigued as to why 4 Material are necessary.  Thankfully, as you see, (once per Turn) you can XYZ Summon this using another Zoodiac and gaining its Material.  So you’re investing FOUR Monsters, but your ? become the total combined atk/def of the Zoodiacs used for XYZ Summon.  AND, if you used another, AS YOU SHOULD HAVE to properly utilize this power, you could easily have a 3000 attacker here (and defender too!).  A Quick Effect lets you detach a Material to destroy a card on the Field.  This Targets, as is more common these days, but it’s a fair, and honest 1-for-1.  It’s not the quickest to drop to the Field, but it’s a fast and powerful card.  Honestly you could use this outside Zoodiac.  You’d lose the attack and defense, but you could protect it and use it to just destroy something each Turn as long as you have the Material.  Maybe not the best use, but you can as it’s a Generic Summon.

Art:  5/5  This is very gorgeous.  This might be one of those the background is prettier to me (not that the character doesn’t look well too!)
