Wrenn’s run in Magic’s story was not that long, as these things go, but it was memorable – and now she’s in the same category as Gideon, Gerrard, and everyone else who saved one or many or all worlds. This climactic depiction of her is perhaps the most abstractly powerful of her cards, with a static ability that smooths all your costs forever, high loyalty for her casting cost, and everyday abilities that draw lots of cards and exert lots of pressure. I say “abstractly” because three mana may not be fast enough to get her a look in Modern and other formats that are crowded with similar options, but she’s worth at least a look in Standard and casual decks. You also have to like that she’s opened the door for non-humanoid planeswalkers – I doubt we’d have gotten Grist, the Hunger Tide in Modern Horizons 2 if she hadn’t been in the first Modern Horizons, and I really hope there are more to come!

Turns out a Phyrexianized tree is still a tree, and Wrenn’s newest card underscores that nicely enough. Coming in at three mana, Wrenn and Realmbreaker has a fascinating suite of abilities. Recurring permanents and making warm bodies out of lands is a rather solid pair of abilities, as is her passive mana fixing. A high base loyalty helps a lot as well to give her time to take root and pull attention. She definitely is more geared towards value, but recursion and defense are both potent day to day tricks, which is what you want in most planeswalkers. Her ultimate is certainly good at putting a game out of reach, but it feels more like a “win more” ability.
