This card reproduces one of the most famous quotes in the entire superhero genre, and I think it’s destined to become famous itself in casual circles. It’s not just a second Pariah or a second Ethereal Armor: it’s both in one, and it opens up a lot of fun deckbuilding questions about how you best leverage each part. It also invites potential mistakes, about over-focusing on the Pariah side and forgetting that it turns creatures into superhero-scale threats that end the game before the Pariah effect becomes relevant. I will point out, though, that cards with umbra armor leverage both sides of the effect very nicely.

All heroes tend to put a lot of weight on their shoulders, and great power begets great responsibility…which is represented in an interesting way here. With Great Power… is two effects: a sort of mega-buff to turn your creature into a heroic avenger, and Pariah. Being able to redirect damage into a creature can save your hide at times, and while this doesn’t have its forebear’s upside of being able to aim damage into an opponent’s creature, this will usually, at worst, buy you one turn without damage coming through. It’s even usually better than an effect like Fog or Holy Day, since the damage isn’t prevented, and damage redirection is harder to stop.

This does run into the standard “aura issue”: it’s a 2-for-1 if your creature gets removed, though the upside here is that they need to remove the creature in most cases to make anything else happen. It’s also not a cheap spell; four mana for a massive buff is still fair, but this is likely going to be a sort of curve-topper. There will certainly be creatures you can put this on to make for a lot of magic, and while this isn’t quite the same as Pariah, it does different things with a similar sort of upside, and that can be enough for some decks.

Constructed: 3.5 (coming off the heels of Final Fantasy, an equipment deck does exist, and this could give it a bit of juice to get over the top)

One of the most overlooked supporting characters in the Spider-Man franchise is Uncle Ben. He is the reason, apart from the nutcracker spider who dares to bite our hero, that Peter Parker becomes a vigilante. Ben tells Pete about the great responsibility right before he’s murdered. And as we all know, people who are important in our lives who are murdered, tend to have quite the after-effect on us. Take Bruce Wayne’s parents for example!

The card itself is quite interesting. It buffs the creature it’s attached to and makes sure you don’t receive damage anymore. What a responsibility for whomever this card is put on! We all remember Cloud from Final Fantasy, who became bigger and better with equipments, and this might just be a powerful addition to that little niche of Magic.

Oh, and eh, indestructible anyone..?
