Witchcrafter Bystreet – Yu-Gi-Oh! Review

Witchcrafter Bystreet
– #INCH-EN024

The first time each “Witchcrafter” monster you control would be destroyed each turn, by battle or card effect, it is not destroyed. You can only use 1 of the following effects of “Witchcrafter Bystreet” per turn, and only once that turn.
● If a “Witchcrafter” monster you control would discard to activate an effect, you can send this card from your field to the GY instead.
● During your End Phase, if you control a “Witchcrafter” monster, while this card is in your GY: You can place this card face-up in your Spell & Trap Zone.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Witchcrafter Bystreet is the protection spell for the archetype…with a little something else.

Protecting each Witchcrafter from destruction the first time it would happen. That is good, but that wouldn’t be enough for a Continuous Spell. If you don’t want to pop it back from the grave to your hand, Bystreet allows for you to pass on a discard cost a Witchcrafter may have for the turn. Every Witchcrafter except Golem has a discard ability, and avoiding that keeps cards in the hand for you to either use or fuction for Madame’s effect. Combined with Haine, you’ll have protection against targeting card effects, and protection against first destruction moves. Can’t forget that if your opponent does get rid of it you can just pop it back to the hand from the grave at your End Phase if you didn’t use the other effect Bystreet carries.

This was a must with all the discarding the archetype does.

I said the Continuous Spells were different with them recovering themselves, so today we will see how with Witchcrafter Bystreet.

Bystreet as I said is a Continuous Spell that gives each Witchcrafter monster you control protection from being destroyed the first time in a turn, which is good to make your Witchcrafters have a little immunity to destruction, if it gave them all complete immunity then that would be a little absurd for a card. Bystreet has two effects you can use once per turn each:

  1. If a Witchcrafter you control would activate its effect that requires you to discard in order to activate, you can send this face-up card on the field to the graveyard instead.
  2. During your End Phase if this card is in the graveyard and you control a Witchcrafter monster, then you can place this card face-up in the Spell and Trap Zone.

The first effect is great to make up for the fact you won’t discard this because you’ll likely want to activate it, so to have that option when you don’t have Spells in the hand anymore maybe is lovely. The second effect is recursion like the other Spells, but this activates itself basically which is great since you’d want the protection effect as much as possible on the field. Bystreet offers good protection and recursion for the Witchcrafter archetype, I wouldn’t fault you for playing three but two might be a good number since that protection won’t stack and you can get to it with ease with Schimetta.

Continuing on the Magic them (Alex a made a pun) is the Continuous Magic card Witchcrafter Bystreet.  We see a few different effects here from this card, and initially, you’ll note that the first time a Witchcrafter Monster you control would be destroyed by Battle, said Monster(s) would not be destroyed.  Protection is good, so unless your opponent is overextended, either they’re using a M/T card of an effect for destruction.

Each of the following can be used once per turn as you choose, and only one of which, per turn:

*You can use this card in place of a discard for the effect of a Theme specific Monster discard

-or-

*During your End Phase, you can add this card (face-up) to your Magic/Trap Zone if you control a Theme Monster.

This does too things overall rather well in recursion and being able to self-sacrifice if necessary, as well as offering the protection we talked about at the start.  The Continuous aspect here is actually useful if only because it can be brought back to the Field so easily.  I’m not sure how the name plays into what the card actually does, but maybe that’s me.

Art:  4/5  On my closing note, that is an alley, which is sort, if not perhaps technically, a ‘by-street’ (bystreet isn’t a word as is).  This seems European, perhaps Venetian?
