Hello Pojo Fans,

Vallon, the Super Psy Skyblaster is a card that may see more play in K-9 and Vanquish Soul because of the recent ban list.

Generic Rank 5 that can perform a Book of Moon during iether Main Phase, either turn, works on everything except Link Monsters, and will function as a great way to interrupt your opponent’s turn.

With 2500ATK/2200DEF, Vallon is packing pretty good stats for attack or defense and, when it is sent to the grave in any fashion, can destroy a face-down card on either side of the field. The obvious choice is if you were to use this effect to book an opponent’s monster, then link this away on your turn to get rid of the monster. It isn’t a reach to think your opponent may have a set Spell/Trap when this effect presents itself, but more and more traps are being used from the hand and had it been face-up or face-down options then it would have been a better effect. Not saying something won’t be there to target, you just are going to lose out to an Impermanence or Evenly Matched before Vallon can benefit. Anything that got reset through its own effect like the Maliss traps can be forced out to be activated immediately rather than saved for another turn, and anything that gets searched via a Spell/Trap search monster effect and then set could be fair game if you were able to get Vallon to the grave that turn through an effect like a once per turn pop a card ability.

Vallon, the Super Psy Skyblaster has plenty of offensive potential with its high ATK/DEF and ability to be summoned in the right archetype. The Book of Moon ability up to twice and the potential to take a card with it when it leaves the field. Being able to force this second effect the same turn can get rid of whatever you just flipped face-down, and as long as you can afford to lose Vallon then that is an option.

Next up, we got a brand new generic Rank 5 that’ll be all the rage with K9 being at full power in the TCG (unless you count Pair-a-Dice Smasher’s ban), Vallon, the Super Psy Skyblaster.

Vallon is a Rank 5 DARK Psychic Xyz with 2500 ATK and 2200 DEF. Good stats for a Rank 5, DARK is always good, and Psychic did get generic cards in Duelist’s Advance as well. Materials being any 2 Level 5s makes it super generic. First effect is a Main Phase Quick Effect, detaching a material to target a face-up monster your opponent controls to change it to face-down Defense Position. You might not stop an effect for this for sure, unless it isn’t an effect that triggers on summon or isn’t a Quick Effect, but it at the very least stops the opponent from using a monster as Synchro, Xyz, or Link fodder. This basically leaves a slot on the opponent’s field blank unless they can Fusion or Tribute Summon really or find some other card to use the set monster as a cost. Not the most powerful disruption, but still decent. Other effect triggers if sent to the graveyard, letting you target a set card on the field and send it to the graveyard. Not often you’ll see set cards unless you force them, but at least it is another Ultimate Slayer target for Xyzs to go with Aggregator, plus I’m sure it’ll come up. HOPT on both effects is fine. Still a good generic Rank 5 for the modern day.

In terms of Genesys format, K9 does have a lot of points allocated to it, with 5 of their main cards adding to 68, making it impossible to use playsets of them all. Pure VS can still play this in Genesys, they only have Hollie Sue at 10 points, so you can use a playset for 30 points and Jialong for free. There’s other Decks capable of making Rank 5s as well, plus the fact Ultimate Slayer is a free card in that format and so is Dogmatika Punishment, so it’s perfect to dump off those over there.

Here’s a monster with awfully specific timing: Vallon, the Super Psy Skyblaster. It’s a Rank 5 DARK Psychic Xyz monster and part of the Skyblaster mini-archetype, though that’s not relevant in most scenarios. It’ll take any 2 level 5 monsters, so you already know it’s meant to push K9 thanks to its ability to field Rank 5 monsters. Beyond K9 and the (pitifully rare) other decks that can make Rank 5s, it’ll have a home in any deck that can send it directly from the Extra Deck to the Graveyard like Dogmatika or Ryzeal for reasons that will be quite clear. Its stats are decent enough for a Rank 5 monster, with 2500 attack and 2200 defense. Nothing too exciting!

Vallon has 2 hard once per turn effects, and they’re both extremely useful at that. The first is a Quick Effect usable during the Main Phase, simply detaching a material to target and flip one of your opponent’s face-up monsters face-down. I feel that flipping has gotten a bad rap because it doesn’t really rob your opponent of bodies, which is somewhat justified against Ritual and Fusion decks like Mitsurugi and Dracotail, but against other kinds of decks, it’s arguably even more potent than standard disruption. Yummy is basically shut down if they can’t field 2 monsters, which is especially important now that Obedience Schooled is Limited. Malice (still seeing decent representation, surprisingly enough) is also at a loss when their Link materials are flipped and they don’t have a way to banish them from the Graveyard. This effect also combos with Vallon’s other effect (especially if you use I:P Masquerena), triggering if it’s sent to the Graveyard to let you target and destroy any face-down card. It’s rather niche, but it’s a surprisingly useful toolbox option for decks like Dogmatika and Ryzeal– it can force out Traps like Mitsurugi Great Purification or the Dracotail Traps before your opponent can save them for a more important choke point. It takes a few steps, but fittingly, it also combos with Castel, the Skyblaster Musketeer to destroy any monsters you’ve flipped. If you have the space, there’s no real reason not to run Vallon if you can summon or dump it.

+Solid flipping disruption that can easily be made in Rank 5 decks
+Graveyard effect gives niche face-down removal
-Graveyard effect only hits face-down cards
-Rank 5 is still a tricky Rank outside of K9
