This card was 6th on my Top 10 list.

Thieves’ Guild Enforcer took a bit to take off, but it turns out that the key to its success was Zendikar Rising, a set with a surfeit of Rogues and elements to support Rogue Tribal. It’s not too hard to get the Enforcer to be a 3/2 with deathtouch, quite a nice deal for 1 mana, and it’s even a card that plays well with multiple copies of itself. It definitely benefited hard from the set that followed Core Set 2021, and the “Dimir Rogues/Mill” archetype has emerged in the post-Omnath Standard as quite the neat deck. A nice early creature that can trade with late creatures and provide passive benefit usually has little trouble finding a home, and I definitely feel that the little rogue has proven herself nicely since then.

This card was not on my Top 10 list.

If you look at black creatures now and black creatures from ten years ago, without the times between as context, you might be forgiven for thinking they’re from different games. Flash is a black ability now? Mill is a black ability now? It looks odd, but they both work in their way – and there are few cards that illustrate the “new black” better than Thieves’ Guild Enforcer. Supporting a mill-centric Rogue tribal game plan at a low cost is cool, and being relevant at any point in the game is unusual for any creature. It may be unfortunate that this card’s late-game boost comes so far down its game text, as some people may only think of it in combination with the mill ability. It does, of course, become active regardless of how those cards got into your opponent’s graveyard, whether from mill or discard or just lots of combat steps.
