Hello Pojo Fans,

The Bystial Aluber starts our look back into my favorite storyline in the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG.

Level 4 Dragon with nothing for DEF, standard 1800ATK, Aluber is finally brought into the storyline as a monster in his true for to be the foil to Albaz. He takes on the name of Albaz while in the grave and on the field because the two of them were apparently the same person at one point at the start of the storyline. When he is summoned he is a 1-for-1 if your opponent were to have a Dragon-Type monster on the field or in the grave. You trade Aluber to take control until the end of the turn, or Special Summon that monster from the opponent’s grave to your side.

Dragon-Type monsters are widely popular and abundant in the game, and many decks use them in some form, often in the Extra Deck. However, not ever deck is using them, nor using them in the amount that would warrant using Aluber to be a counter measure. The break-even effect is good and holds to the characters personality: while Albaz is Fusion-based, Aluber steals. When Dragon Link was the top meta deck I would say this card would belong in the Side Deck, but that deck was dealt with enough to limit the effectiveness of using Aluber in the Side Deck. Mathmech, Runick, Spright, Labrynth, and Kashtira aren’t making Dragon-Type monsters out of their Extra Deck.

Useful, sure, solid effect in terms of mechanics, yes, but practical in the game currently…not as much as it used to me. Branded Despia was popular a format ago, same with Dragon Link and Albaz-focused decks. If that were to happen again then I’d say this card could see some Side Deck potential, but Albaz was always the more direct route to taking away your opponent’s monster: All it had to do was match a Fusion Material to partner with Albaz versus being a specific Type like with Aluber. Albaz wins again.

We finished Visas’s recent lore update, so now we’ll move to the end of the Albaz lore for a few weeks by starting with The Bystial Aluber.

The Bystial Aluber is a Level 4 DARK Dragon Tuner with 1800 ATK and 0 DEF. ATK is good for a Level 4 while DARK and Dragon is one of the best combinations in the game. It became a Tuner out of nowhere, but can’t complain about it. It’s name becomes Fallen of Albaz while on the field or in the graveyard, so a 3rd Albaz option for the Main Deck I guess. Upon being Normal or Special Summoned, you can discard a card to target a Dragon the opponent controls or in their graveyard and send this card to the graveyard to either take control until the End Phase or Special Summon the opponent’s monster depending on where it was targeted at. I mean, Dragons are one of the best types in the game, so it’s often to see them. With that said, I don’t know if this sort of specific counter is good enough. Stealing an opponent’s Dragon might be nice if it wasn’t for the fact you need to discard to get this effect to begin with, which honestly you could just do better things with other cards to enable strong plays. Hard once per turn on this effect, of course. It’s pretty middling to be honest compared to the other Bystial monsters not named Alba Los. You could probably go without this.

Advanced Rating: 2/5

Art: 5/5 I wish the card was better, because this art is way too sick.

This week we’re covering miscellaneous Albaz lore cards as the lore comes to its thrilling conclusion in Cyberstorm Access. The Bystial Aluber starts the week, a level 4 DARK Dragon Tuner monster, in a bizarre departure from the original Aluber, even if it fits with the other Bystial monsters. Being a DARK Dragon, on top of being a Tuner, is always fantastic, though it’s difficult to compete with Rokket Tracer as a generic target if you had the choice. Incidentally, it does share Aluber’s statline of 1800 attack and 0 defense, which isn’t exactly impressive, but at least it’s a nice reference.

Oddly, but fittingly, Aluber’s name becomes Fallen of Albaz on the field and in the Graveyard, so it can be searched by the smorgasbord of cards that search monsters that mention Albaz, like Tri-Brigade Mercourier, and in a pinch it’s a material to summon an Albaz Fusion without Albaz proper. Aluber’s sole once per turn effect triggers if it’s Normal or Special Summoned, letting you discard a card and target a Dragon monster on your opponent’s field or in their Graveyard to send Aluber to the Graveyard and either take control of that monster or Special Summon it to your field. You’re meant to use this as a “gotcha” against your opponent’s Dragon monsters, particularly rival Bystials and their own Fallen of Albaz. Much like Alba Lenatus before it, however, this effect is just not useful enough even in matchups where you should have the edge (particularly against Dragon Link decks). That said, for Bystial Synchro decks, Aluber is an easy way to make their new boss when combined with any of the level 6 Bystial monsters. Aluber isn’t totally useless, but being a Tuner isn’t helpful for Branded Despia, and Dragon Link has much better Tuners to run.
