The Final Fantasy set’s saga creatures are arguably a big step up in complexity, tracking (+1/+1 counters and chapter counters?!), and rules interactions. Fortunately, some of them are also pretty straightforward and obvious in their applications. There’s pretty much nothing unappealing about G.F. Cerberus’ abilities, as many red decks will be absolutely eager to add more spell-copying effects to their list. For some such decks, the more you can copy, the faster you can win, especially in multiplayer where burn spells can sometimes lag behind. But he’s not a one-dimensional card – he goes equally well with the more unique red effects like Heat Shimmer and Reckless Impulse. And he might even make a pseudo-kindred deck with the various Theros sets’ Cerberus-themed cards, which is pretty great in itself!

Coming from Final Fantasy VIII, Guardian Force Cerberus is fittingly one of the earliest ways to get Double and Triple in the game, which (fittingly) lets you cast twice or thrice in a turn. The game’s magic system is a fairly unique and acquired taste, but that’s neither here nor now.

The main point of Cerberus is that you want to get his second and third saga abilities off and make use of those. Everyone sees them coming, but if you can cast something suitably efficacious, who cares? Doubling and tripling is quite a potent way to maximize efficiency, and while Cerberus himself isn’t much for combat (just a vanilla body), there’s a lot of intriguing things you can do in the process.

Constructed: 3.75 (powerful if you can set up, and cheap enough that you can use Cerberus to set up a finisher)
Casual: 4.5
Limited: 3.5
Multiplayer: 3.75
Commander [EDH]: 4.25
