This card’s name may stand out a little (at least until we get used to it), but that flavor text is actually pretty badass – and shows why the Final Fantasy franchise has persisted for nearly forty years now. Additionally, any RPG’s starting town is quietly important, usually introducing you to the setting and the game mechanics, and this mirrors the quiet importance of multilands in Magic. If you’re playing this game for any length of time, you’ll soon grasp and accept this class of card’s significance. It’s hard to get into a state of mind where rare lands read as impressive or splashy as the big dragons and similar cards – I’ve been playing most of my life and I have to do it consciously. But make no mistake: a five-color land with the “fast” mechanic from Scars of Mirrodin is powerful and unprecedented, helping out most any three-color strategy or kindred. And it even works in Town-themed midrange, which I’m still trying to wrap my head around but is probably going to show up in casual at some point.

Every adventure had to start somewhere, and Starting Town is just as good a place as any, an interesting take on Mana Confluence and City of Brass. It doesn’t always come in untapped, but it does when you’d usually most need it to, and it can even give you mana without any suffering. The subtype is that interesting mix of “irrelevant” and “potentially relevant”; it likely won’t be the swingiest part of this card, but it doesn’t hurt.

Starting Town is an interesting card that will quietly put work in; it’s not a strict upgrade over its forebears, but it’s still quite a good card to play alongside them (or if you lack the former), and even if it’s late in the game, it’s not the worst land you can see. I’d definitely keep an eye on this card…it’ll put in a lot of work going forward.

The land is most likely referencing Cornelia, the first ever Final Fantasy starting town, as evidenced by the FFI on the card. That said, while Final Fantasy has had a fair few iconic towns over its run, few of them would fit the iconography of the one we have here.
