I screamed aloud as it tore through them, and now, it’s left me blind . . .

Most people are not going to find paying seven mana to destroy a land very reasonable, although our tune generally changes when we’re being locked down by Maze of Ith or see that an opponent is setting up Dark Depths. The main event will, much of the time, be that twenty damage, and there are so many things you can do with it that I’ll just point out a couple of the highlights. It takes a lot of turns to get even the most tank-like of Gideon’s incarnations up to a point of survivability; casting this off Boseiju or Insist is a literal nuclear option against Dralnu, Lich Lord; and 20 just happens to be a player’s starting life total, so if you happen to control Stuffy Doll, you’re in a good position!

Here’s a card that’s a little awkward. The flavor of the card is spot on but I’m saddened at the thought of an Ixalan without dinosaurs. Mass removal is a bend of red’s mechanics, but it has been done before and for cheaper. There lies Star of Extinction’s biggest flaw, it exists in standard alongside Hour of Devastation. For 2 less mana you can destroy almost any threat including those pesky gods. If you are playing modern, Blasphemous Act can hit even harder and sometimes for cheaper than Hour of Devastation. With that being said, those two cards can’t destroy double-faced lands. Red has always had trouble in multiplayer so giving players access to another board wipe is appreciated. I can see this card becoming popular in Commander where access to the the previously mentioned cards is limited and game play is slower allowing you to hit 7 mana. Although not entirely useless, I feel like this card exists purely for flavor.

We would love more volunteers to help us with our MTG Card of the Day reviews.  If you want to share your ideas on cards with other fans, feel free to drop us an email (very top of the page).  We’d be happy to link back to your blog / YouTube Channel / etc.   😉
