Marvel’s comic titles certainly do love their adjectives, and Spectacular Spider-Man is sometimes an apt name for this card. He can certainly be used as a three-mana “counter” to sweepers, but that won’t always be a great price for such an effect. He makes up for it by being useful in numerous different situations – surprise blocker, evasive attacker, and another example of how two mana apparently buys a 3/2 now for some cards (I’m not getting any more used to that one). He may not be a big play per se, but his impact on the game can be outsized, and just knowing that he’s in your deck can change how opponents play their game.

Here to save the day (maybe), Spectacular Spider-Man is a pretty interesting creature by virtue of all his tricks. Two mana brings in a 3/2 with flash, but one more mana can sweeten the pot by giving him flying or by shielding your board out of nowhere. Hexproof and indestructible isn’t perfect protection, but it hits a lot of things, and there’s even the fun of not needing to spring the trigger immediately. While he’s not the best attacker, conditional flying is a pretty solid place to be for a three-power creature, and there is also a lot to be done with his low mana value and low-ish toughness (which lets him be searched by Recruiter of the Guard, to name one). He’s not flashy (despite having flash), but he’s a good workhorse of a card that’ll bail you out a fair bit.

What does a superhero do? He arrives when you need him most. So yes, of course Spectacular Spider-Man has flash. For a little extra, it can also fly. And last but not least: he can also sacrifice himself to save the rest.

An almost perfect transfer from comic book to card. He does exactly what he needs to do and all of that for only 2 mana. He will probably not make headlines – no Daily Bugle for this card – but he will have you whisper ‘thank you Spider-Man’ at the moment an opponent casts a very unwelcome Wrath of God

Collectors will love the fact that there are 11 different versions of this card. I especially dig the one with the black – or symbiote – suit, my favorite!
