Outside of Portal: Three Kingdoms, Rolling Earthquake essentially deals X damage to all creatures. That’s actually decent, as its namesake can be avoided in a number of ways, though it may not be the most mana-efficient way of doing so. For example, it slightly trails Anger of the Gods and Storm’s Wrath in terms of the ratio of mana spent to damage dealt. It’s still nice to have another option for that effect, and it can also finish off opponents without actually targeting them, which is always good. Not to mention the cool Romance of the Three Kingdoms flavor and art!

Constructed: 2/5
Casual: 3/5
Limited: 4/5 (I’m not sure if anyone’s ever done much draft or sealed with Portal: Three Kingdoms, where there’ll be some creatures it can’t affect. But it hits every single creature in Double Masters)
Multiplayer: 3/5
Commander: 3/5

In 98% of cases, Rolling Earthquake is an upgrade to Earthquake, since horsemanship is the Portal: Three Kingdoms-exclusive take on flying (and generally limited to the roughly 29 creatures that have it). Like Earthquake and many cards of its ilk, its strength comes in its scaling and its ability to be “tuned” to wipe a board while sparing your creatures if they’re big enough, and it can even double as a game-ending damage spell if needed. The general universality of Rolling Earthquake, as well as its redundancy, is what has made it one of the enduring spells from the set and a neat trick for most red decks.

Constructed: 1.5 (Earthquakes are not great in Legacy)
Casual: 4
Limited: 4.5 (conveniently, it hits every creature in Double Masters)
Multiplayer: 3.5
Commander: 4
