It’s now possible to make a deck, in Commander or elsewhere, themed around using as many outside aids as possible. Between the monarch, dungeons, and the Ring emblem, you might win some games just off the confusion! Jokes aside, it was almost inevitable that Slivers would get a monarch card eventually, since their hives have always used royal terms (mimicking the way we name queen ants). And Regal Sliver is a strong one, since the one thing all Sliver decks have a lot of is Slivers. There’s an interesting tension between saving your creatures to steal the monarch back if you need to, versus playing them out to overrun the opponent; the advantage, of course, is that you can do either one with just one card. I think this will end up being one of the more powerful cards from this set for casual play.

Constructed: 2.5
Casual: 5
Limited: N/A
Multiplayer: 4 (you’ll be targeted, but Sliver decks usually are anyway)
Commander [EDH]: 4

Monarch has been one of the more interesting abilities since it debuted in Conspiracy, a threat of card advantage to drive interaction. Regal Sliver is a way for Slivers to claim a little crown for themselves, and it can turn into a massive team-wide buff after they have the crown for themselves. A four-mana 3/3 that draws you a card that turn is okay, but it scales aggressively with Slivers’ ability to swarm, and it also gives you a card each turn until they hit you. But Slivers are famous for being able to slip through defenses, and a Sliver coming in reclaims the crown, so that’s not too terrible.

Regal Sliver seems like one of those Slivers that plays better than it looks…the deck is infamous for its explosive turns, and the ability to buff your army while maintaining card advantage is a pretty big boon. I think it’s a step too slow for Legacy, as Slivers in general are, but it’s quite a solid part to a deck that explodes gratuitously.

Constructed: 2.5 (Slivers aren’t great in Legacy, and this is a bit too slow to make the deck really speed up)
Casual: 5
Limited: N/A (depends on the number of Slivers, but this is probably no worse than a 3.5 or 4 on its own)
Multiplayer: 4
Commander [EDH]: 4
