Just seeing this guy’s art makes me feel a little warm and fuzzy inside. Also, the fact that he has no “real” creature types printed on him but you still wouldn’t mistake him for anything other than a pirate is slightly thought-provoking. He’s not particularly well-placed for constructed even in the environment of Legends and other 1994 sets, as six mana also buys you a Mahamoti Djinn or Triskelion; and as far as blue-black Legends cards go, Ramses Overdark has a more exploitable ability for formats like Commander. It is somewhat notable that blue and black don’t have a lot of first strike, but they have other ways to get around that deficiency nowadays. He certainly scores you a lot of cool points, and if you’re playing with Admiral Beckett Brass in Commander, you may as well include him as one of your 99 cards just for the fun of it.

King of
Hearts

Alone in a tavern, not far from here, sits a pirate drinking some beer. Taking a drink to drown his sorrows sits Ramirez DePietro. Now let me tell you his tale. Long ago he had wind in his sail, and a tankard full of ale. In a twist of fate he ended up like his treasure, a forgotten relic of the past. Despite running ashore long ago, the course Ramirez charted has led a new generations of pirates searching for the treasure that will make their dreams come true.
