This card is way, way above the curve, but considering that it changed the entire course of the Marvel universe, I think it’s earned it. You might not guess it from looking at pro play, but there are plenty of casual decks that can use a one-mana 1/1 with reach and deathtouch – it’s a great early blocker and a surprisingly good late blocker for multiplayer games in particular. And that’s before you get into the opportunity to create a toolbox deck with the variants of Spider-Man and his allies, and of course the obligatory mention of changelings. I might have mentioned that my favorite style of card in Magic is the simple or elegant card that enables things beyond the letter of its game text, and Radioactive Spider is a perfect example of this.

A simple tutor with a lot of use besides, a 1/1 with reach and deathtouch does well as a blocker to hold back threats, and while it’s not flawless, it ensures that it punches above its weight all game long. But if you need to spin it into a more impactful creature, it can turn into a pretty solid tutor effect to help the Spider-Man deck keep working. It’s a simple glue card that helps hold things together for a deck that lacks some cohesion otherwise.

Constructed: 3.75
Casual: 4
Limited: 4 (good early, and tutoring can really help a deck in a pinch)
Multiplayer: 3
Commander [EDH]: 3.25 (being a one-mana tutor creature that tutors gives it a bit of intrigue, even if it’s a tutor for a narrow deck)

The bite that started a billion-dollar franchise (well played, hasbro). The spider to end all spiders, but to begin a young man’s life as friendly neighborhood superhero.

A simple card at first, but also a powerful tutor that can bring out a Peter Parker card, right when you need him the most.

I love these little cards that are secretly gems. As useful in a limited environment as it might be at the kitchen table, or maybe even in some competitive decks.
