Final Fantasy IX is one of the games that I’m less familiar with, so I won’t have too much to say about this character’s background or lore this time around. I will say, though, that a lot of the games came up with unique and intriguing things that are often not even the main focus of the story, and Quina probably qualifies as that – this card makes me want to learn more! Her ability makes me think of the green-blue trinkets strategy from Modern Horizons 2 draft, where you tried to amass as many tokens as you could, often of different types. A single extra frog doesn’t sound like much, but you can use them to block and buy yourself more time, and even attack if your bigger things get removed. That’s before you get into the fact that Quina herself can use the frog tokens, and potentially become too big for opponents to handle. There are also situations where an incidental Food token doesn’t do much, and it will look like a better bonus when it comes with a bonus frog on top.

Yes, you are reading that typeline correctly: Quina, Qu Gourmet is the only Qu in Magic, a race of gourmands from Final Fantasy IX known for their fondness for frogs and their particular speech patterns. Quina is one of two living Qu you encounter in the game, so I suppose their scarceness is fitting.

Interestingly, Quina’s card references their fondness for frogs above all else and less of their blue magic tendencies…you get frogs whenever you make other tokens, and those frogs can be consumed. In effect, Quina, Qu Gourmet functions a bit like a poor man’s Chatterfang…though Chatterfang is a menace to society, so that’s separate. Still, if you have the means to make tokens through other means, a free frog can sweeten the pot, and being in green gives Quina plenty of ways to access combat buffs to make them hit even harder. Their inclusion in the set is a pleasant surprise, but a welcome one to me (a fan of their home game).

Now that the banned and restricted buzz is dying down, let’s get back to reviewing cards shall we?

Today we have what I would like to call Chatterfang’s baby brother. Token making is a beloved part of Magic, and we like to make a lot. Whether it’s Treasure tokens to stack our mana base or just 1/1 chump blockers, a token is always welcome.

This happy-go-lucky food enthusiast can’t make those tokens by himself, unfortunately. But pair him with Chatterstorm or a Tendershoot Dryad and you’re good to go.

Quina Quen is a character from FFIX and is a companion of Zidane, who we saw last week. S/he is very popular and was even voted as the most original role-playing character ever by IGN. I absolutely love the art. A very cute card.
