Priestess of the Ashened City – #PHNI-EN093

If “Obsidim, the Ashened City” is in the Field Zone, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). You can only Special Summon “Priestess of the Ashened City” once per turn this way. If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can add 1 “Ashened” card from your Deck to your hand, except “Priestess of the Ashened City”. You can only use this effect of “Priestess of the Ashened City” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Priestess of the Ashened City is the only Level 4 or lower Pyro in the archetype…the wallets of those wanting to play this archetype are screaming.

Searchable by means within the archetype, but yes, Bonfire would be a welcome addition to the archetype to search Priestess out. All Ashened monsters can Special Summon themselves if you have your Field Spell on the field, making them all extenders. Not the greatest of stats for a Level 4, but Priestess is your Ashened search monster, getting you any Ashened card except herself. Her job is obviously to get you whatever you need at that moment. If you wanna get rid of Veidos on the opponent’s side of the field, get Hero to pop it. Maybe you want another copy of your Field Spell to get that free draw and cycle back ability? Whatever you want Priestess will get you to it.

Priestess is a pretty simple card currently for the archetype. Search her out however you can (or can afford), summon or Special Summon if you have the Field Spell out, get your search depending on the situation. If you are facing Veidos or are making your opponent’s monsters Pyro, likely going to search Hero to get that spot removal. We’ll have to wait and see if she gets better with the support that likely will continue to come for the archetype, currently, she’s just a good searcher.

Now that we looked at the Field Spell, we can cover a monster, with the choice going to the best of the Ashened monsters so far: Priestess of the Ashened City.

Priestess is a Level 4 DARK Pyro with 1200 ATK and 1300 DEF. Not the greatest stats, but being a Level 4 Pyro does give access to Bonfire, plus DARK makes it an Allure of Darkness target. If Obsidim, the Ashened City is in the Field Zone, you can Special Summon this card from the hand, which all the Ashened monsters in the Main Deck do, so you got decent swarming. You can only summon Priestess like this once a turn, so it doesn’t get too overwhelming. Upon Normal or Special Summon, you get to search for any Ashened card that isn’t another Priestess from the Deck, which makes this a Normal Summonable way to get to Obsidim if you need it, or you get to the rest of your monster line-up to Special Summon them. Hero is nice for disruption, destroying an opponent’s Pyro monster that you likely made into a Pyro, or you get to destroy their Veidos for his effects while Hero gets you back to your Obsidim. King is also solid for more swarming for your Ashened monsters, especially with Obsidim on the field. Besides those two and the Field Spell, you got the Continuous Trap, which you likely don’t need to search cause Veidos gets it from the Deck. Priestess of course gets better when we get more Ashened support since that means more search targets, it’s unfortunate it can’t search for Awakening of Veidos to really get the ball rolling, though. Hard once per turn on the search effect, as you’d expect. Priestess is good mainly since it’s Stratos for Ashened, getting you to almost any card part of the archetype. 3 of this and 3 Bonfire should mean you’ll be able to see this fairly often, which should be a goal to get to your key Ashened cards.

Art: 5/5 This archetype excels in the artwork department, so have to give Konami their props here.

Following up on Obsidim is our first actual Ashened monster, Priestess of the Ashened City. As Jerome suggested way back in the blurb for Phantom Nightmare, Priestess is a level 4 DARK Pyro monster (unusually for that type), making it searchable with the eponymous Bonfire as well as Obsidim, the Ashened City if you can destroy it. Being level 4 is also helpful for summoning Infernal Flame Banshee, which can search this card as well as the other Ashened monsters. Priestess’s stats are quite lackluster, with only 1200 attack and 1300 defense, but cut a combo piece some slack!

All Ashened monsters (not counting their quasi-boss monster) share the same first effect, letting you Special Summon them from the hand once per turn as long as you control Obsidim. For Priestess, it’s not a huge deal since you can just Normal Summon it, but you’ll definitely have to rely on it to get out your high-level Ashened monsters. Priestess’s only other effect is a very simple hard once per turn ROTA, searching any Ashened card on Normal or Special Summon. If you don’t have it yet, you’ll probably grab Obsidim, but as usual, grab what you see fit for your combo line. Priestess unfortunately can not search Veidos, which is a huge pet peeve with this archetype in general, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. Not much else to say about Priestess, it’s a very simple card but it’s effective at what it does; this card’s main negative quirk is more the fault of Obsidim not being a true one-card starter either. Obviously run 3, and max out on Bonfires (if you can).

+Highly accessible with Bonfire and Infernal Flame Banshee
+Searches most combo pieces
-Not a one-card starter
-Can’t search Veidos cards!

Art: 4/5 There’s a reason everyone called this the “Dark Souls” archetype!
