By most standards, the Carolina is a very ordinary ship. Her speed is average, her cargo is better, her cannons are worse, and her ability...
she doesn't even have one. Why is she an integral part of so many American fleets?

To put it simply, the USA is so desperate for something that resembles a gold ship, even this one will do. Seven points for four cargo at decent speed isn't bad. Her cannons are a waste, but three masts make her harder to sink than most cheap ships. You can use her as she is, or add a Helmsman for some real speed, with plenty of free cargo left over. The only reason she doesn't get added to every American fleet is that the Rattlesnake with a Helmsman costs the same as the Carolina with no crew, has the same number of free cargo, and is a little bit faster.

The Carolina's only really good attribute is her low price; the USA has only ten ships at her cost or less. As such, she often gets tacked on to USA fleets as an afterthought, to bring in some gold here and there in case the American gunships fail at their job of ruling the seas. Most other factions have better ships, to be sure (maybe the Cursed would be glad for a ship like this), but for an American admiral who wants doubloons, this is about as good as you'll get.
