Cadet-Captain Mike

Name:    Naegling (Vikings)

Card:    FN #004 (Common)

Points:  18

Masts: 3

Cargo: 3

Moves: L

Guns : 2L x2, 2L x2, 2L x2

Hit %: 200 (S), 200 (L)

Ability: Longship. If this ship shoots at a ship that was previously shot at by another ship this turn, she gets +1 to her cannon rolls against that ship this turn.

The Naegling is the most expensive Common ship in the entire game, equalled only by the lesser longship Muninn and the hopelessly overpriced USS Springfield. For 18 points, do you get something that equals HMS Leicester or the USS Enterprise? Let's take a look.

L speed is now considered "average," so I can't complain too loudly there. 3 cargo isn't much for such a costly ship, especially since there is no linked crew to save a space. Her cannons... well, the ability to fire six 2L shots speaks for itself. I once watched in awe as this ship took out the five-masted Le Superbe in one superb shoot action. The down side is that you've got only three masts. With dice luck that's just a little above average, a ship like the Longshanks could leave the Naegling derelict in one turn, and the Longshanks costs only 1/3 as much. Longships like these tend to be fire magnets with short life spans.

Captain and Helmsman should be mandatory. Think hard about using Shayna Duex for your Captain; she costs 3 points more, but adds a reroll, which could save your dragon figurehead if you attack a powerful enemy and miss one too many shots. A Shipwright could be a very useful third crew, since fixing one mast gives you two shots back. A Firepot Specialist might also earn his keep, since he can keep on hurting the enemy even after his own ship sinks (which is likely).

This is almost certainly the Vikings' best fighter. But 18 points is huge for a ship that can't take a pounding. The Naegling embodies all that is good and bad about the Viking faction, so if you like the Norsemen, you'll love this ship, and if you don't like them, you'll hate this ship.

Draco Starcloud Naegling

I wish I knew what the game designers were thinking when they made longboats so expensive compared to boats of similar size. Longboats are like the battlecruisers to the six-mast Junk's battleship: similar firepower with less defense.

On to the ship though. It's a fighter like most of its brethren, but its ability is almost unnecessary.

It gets a +1 to ships that have already been shot at, but its guns are already 2L. With the amazing firepower available to the Naegling already, you shouldn't bother it with stragglers unless it's a ripe target like the original El Acorazado or a 10-mast Junk. This ship should be the one leading the charge unless you can find a better warboat.

For all the Naegling's impressive firepower, you wouldn't want it for gold running even if it could do that well. The Naegling only has three cargo spaces, so you can fit some good crew aboard but it's not enough for treasure. She also only moves L, so she's not fast enough to go for gold.

Also, like all Longboats, the Naegling is very expensive. She costs a grand 18 points, though I'd take her over the Executioner any day. Unlike most Longboats, the Naegling is almost worth the high cost.

I give the Naegling a 3/5.
