Shap'ng-Tsai
Jade Rebellion - South China Seas

Once per turn before you give this ship an action, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, this ship may be given the same action twice. This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against English ships.

Katsura-Chan

This ship may move and shoot using the same move action. Once per turn, you may reroll any die roll you make for this ship; you must use the second die roll result.

Richard Shap'ng-Tsai
This guy - looking unfeasibly handsome for a South China Seas pirate by the way - is a retread of good old Capitan Gaston St Croix from the Crimson Coast.
He provides a repeat action (which 99 times out of a 100 means a second round of moving and shooting!) plus a special bonus of +1 against the poor old English.
This is neat, because most of the ‘roll 5 or 6 for an extra / repeat action’ characters are 5 points just for that ability alone, so the +1 against theEnglish is a nice addition. It’s a shame we don’t see a few more of these characters with specific +1s against other named factions thrown in. There are one or two others, but the English seem to be the most popular hate target. I guess that’s because back then we ruled the waves, huh?

My rating – One of the essential Jade Rebel named crew. 4/5

Katsura-Chan
This is a new named crew type, which basically rolls two pre-existing abilities into one named character.
You might think this is a bit feeble in terms of a lack of imagination on the part of the designers. On the other hand, you might think it’s rather good, because you get a pair of abilities in one character, rather than two separate crew - thereby saving yourself a precious cargo slot.
In this case, it’s the the ‘move and shoot’ ability twinned with the ‘re-roll any dice once per turn’ ability.
Ordinarily, these abilities would cost you 3 points each (unless you used the re-roll ability of a 0 points limit ransom character) - so 6 points for Katsura-Chan is bang on the money.
All sounds good, I hear you say – what’s the downside?
Well the downside is that the strength of combining two abilities into one character is also its weakness. Because if you happen to get hit by a ship with a crew/cargo eliminator ability (or lose a boarding action), instead of losing either your captain or your re-roller, you now stand to lose both in one hit!

My rating: Overall, another essential character for the Jade Rebels – 4/5
