Photon Emperor – #PHHY-EN001

If this card is sent to the GY, except from the field, while another “Photon” or “Galaxy” monster is on your field or in your GY: You can Special Summon this card in Defense Position. You can only use this effect of “Photon Emperor” once per turn. After you Normal or Special Summon this card, you can Normal Summon 1 LIGHT monster during your Main Phase this turn, in addition to your Normal Summon/Set. (You can only gain this effect once per turn.)

Hello Pojo Fans,

Photon Emperor is one of the many cards Galaxy Summoner could summon from the grave, though Emperor can do that himself.

Big Level 8 Warrior that can Special Summon himself from the grave if sent there while you have another “Photon” or “Galaxy” monster is on your field or in your grave. Sure, again, Special Summon in defense, and Emperor’s 1000DEF isn’t going to last him very long. Despite that, it makes him an extender into Rank 8 plays, Galaxy Summoner changing his Level to 4 for Rank 4 plays, and Link 2 stuff. You will be doing some discarding in the dedicated archetype deck for Photo/Galaxy through stuff like Galaxy-Eyes Solflare Dragon discarding to destroy a Special Summoned monster your opponent has, Galaxy Hundred like a Continuous Foolish Burial, Galaxy Photon Dragon (Tomorrow’s card) as another Galaxy Summoner-style card, and the dependable Galaxy Soldier discard to Special Summon itself.

Once Normal or Special Summoned, Emperor grants you another Normal Summon if it is a LIGHT monster. In an archetype that runs a lot of Level 4 and under this is a good effect. Galaxy Summoner gets you another Galaxy or Photon monster, Foolish Burial Emperor to Special Summon him, get another Normal Summon and suddenly you have four monsters on the field for the price of two cards, and there was no cost paid. From there you can do almost anything, though I’m sure Rank 8 is going to be a top play.

I didn’t even mention how in the Galaxy/Photon deck Emperor gets you a +1 off Trade-In if you have a Galaxy or Photon in your grave or on the field. The archetype does a lot of Special Summoning, and it’s nice to see an easy Special Summon Level 8 monster that is pretty balanced.

From a Galaxy monster to a Photon monster, we get Photon Emperor.

Photon Emperor is a Level 8 LIGHT Warrior with 2800 ATK and 1000 DEF. Fairly good ATK for a Level 8 to have, LIGHT is still good, and Warrior is always nice. First effect triggers by being sent to the graveyard from anywhere but the field while you already have a Photon or Galaxy monster on your field or in your graveyard, letting you Special Summon this card in Defense Position. It’s fairly easy to get this into the grave with something like Galaxy Soldier, Galaxy Hundred, or just a simple Foolish Burial if you wanted. It’s a hard once per turn on the Special Summon effect, because after this card is Normal or Special Summoned, you can Normal Summon a LIGHT monster during your Main Phase that turn in addition to your Normal Summon or Set, with you only being able to gain that effect once a turn. It’s a good way to get more monsters on the field as well, since you want to get as much on the field as possible for Rank 4s or Rank 8s. It at least triggers off Galaxy Expedition as well, which is an even easier way to summon this. It’s a fine card, though you do need other cards to make good use out of it. Still a worthwhile investment for a Galaxy/Photon Deck since it isn’t like they got anything that much better.

Can’t have a new wave of Galaxy-Eyes support without another level 8 monster; Photon Emperor’s a level 8 LIGHT Warrior monster. Being a level 8 LIGHT monster, it can take advantage of a lot of cards Photon decks already play, like Trade-In and the new card Galaxy Hundred, plus as a Photon card it can be searched by the archetype’s myriad of ROTAs. While it’s obviously not a Dragon in card art, it unfortunately can’t be used with cards like Galaxy-Eyes Afterglow Dragon and Nebula Dragon. 2800 attack is decent for a level 8 monster, though its low defense of 1000 leaves a lot to be desired.

Photon Emperor’s first effect is a hard once per turn, letting you Special Summon it from the Graveyard if it’s sent there from anywhere except the field as long as there’s another Galaxy or Photon monster on your field or in the Graveyard. This makes it an excellent target for Trade-In and Galaxy Hundred, as long as you can field or dump another Galaxy or Photon monster, anyway, and get an extra level 8 body. After being Normal or Special Summoned, Photon Emperor will also let you Normal Summon a LIGHT monster during the Main Phase in addition to your regular Normal Summon or Set, with the natural caveat of only getting it once per turn. Pretty simple extender effect, and it’ll help summon the Photon and Galaxy cards that can’t Special Summon themselves like Galaxy Wizard. Again, I kinda wish this card was a Dragon, but it makes sense that it’s not one; overall a great extender for Galaxy-Eyes decks.
