I remember thinking how odd it was that a section of Commander’s community objected so strenuously to cards like Opposition Agent, Hullbreacher, and Drannith Magistrate which explicitly combat the degeneracy that seeps into some playgroups. In hindsight, it is not so surprising: Commander’s rise has necessarily exposed some of the undercurrents in the format. It attracts people who want to play Legacy-tier cards in a more accessible context, for example where you only need one $150 card rather than four. It attracts combination and synergy decks that are too slow for competitive formats, just as every casual format tends to. It lends itself to finishes that sidestep the basic game mechanics, since it is much harder for a deck to deal 120 damage (or even 63 commander damage) than to cast Thassa’s Oracle. But in such a format, it is important to have answers and countermeasures that ensure that everyone has a chance to play the way they want – because that is also the point of a format like Commander.
That’s what Opposition Agent is. It’s efficient, it’s brutal when you cast it with flash, and it breaks some people’s hero cards in half like Bane did in 1993. But in the kind of games that a format like Commander is capable of turning into, that is exactly what you need. Do not be alarmed, but be prepared. And play it yourself when you have to – it’s just that good a card.
Constructed: 4
Casual: 3 (much like Dark Confidant, it’s an outstanding card that kitchen table decks can do without)
Limited: 3
Multiplayer: 4
Commander [EDH]: 4
The best tutor color gets one of the best tutor hosers…seems fitting. Opposition Agent is a great way to close the door on an opponent’s attempts to search through their library by letting you steal the pieces for yourself…or just leave them in exile forever. Flash means you can drop this when it’ll do the most damage, and it’s able to sit on the board menacingly as a threat to dissuade further tutoring.
This card was made for Commander, and it (unsurprisingly) sees most of its play there, turning tutors into tragedy and making three mana in black a very frightening prospect. It even gets some Legacy play here and there as a way to make decks play a bit more honestly. This is certainly a card that can ruin days, and while it’s not the most resilient body, it’s really more of an upside to a very potent effect that can swing a game in a hurry.
Constructed: 4.5
Casual: 3 (you will not have many friends)
Limited: 3 (it’s going to just be a 3/2 with flash, which isn’t anything special)
Multiplayer: 4.25
Commander [EDH]: 4.75 (it’s a Game Changer for a reason)

A game changer with a Spider-Man costume. Here it is, the creature that annoys everything it comes up against.
Imagine controlling a player while he’s searching his library. No, imagine you flashing this in the moment your opponent wants to start searching his library. The moment it enters, it’s like a gatekeeper of sorts. You’re constantly whispering ‘do it, do it’ while your opponent sweats it out trying to figure out how to work around it. On the other hand, it gives all three your opponents the perfect reason to say ‘let’s get rid of this, shall we?’
A hot card with hot art.
