I really don’t know why red doesn’t get more additional combat step cards. I know it must have had some after Relentless Assault in 9th or 10th Edition, but I genuinely can’t remember. Anyway, Moraug’s condition for triggering those steps is surprisingly easy, though aggressive red decks will usually have run out of lands to play by the time he’s on the table. I actually think he might do better in Commander and other multiplayer formats, where he can team up with other similarly-costed beatsticks and target a different player in each combat step. (Not to mention all the fetchlands and things you have in older card pools!)

Moraug, Fury of Akoum is a unique mythic rare, one that can potentially end the game in a single turn if you play your hand carefully; additional combat steps can make for a veritable bloodbath, and you can even get more than one if you have the means to get the landfall triggers off. While it lacks haste, you can still use a standing army to play demolition derby in one turn, and you even get a nice little attack buff with each swing. It’s definitely one of those “win more” creatures, but it does the job very well, and it’s a passable enough body to make magic happen.

Constructed: 2.25 (not sold on it in Standard, but it can do damage if you build carefully)

Limited: 4.5
Multiplayer: 3.5
Commander: 4
