Flexibility is the name of the game. That’s always the case with Commands, but when you have ones with X in their cost (which happens less than you might expect), the scalability adds even more. Mishra’s Command is equally good at taking over a game or turning one around when you’re behind, and it has some obvious side applications with reanimator or madness cards. I also couldn’t help but notice that the mode I was referring to, the first one, says “target player” – that’s standard for cards intended to be good in multiplayer, but in this particular case, it can work as either a boost for your Two-Headed Giant partner or a strange sort of disruption effect. Wheel of Fortune has been doing much the same thing in various formats for a long time: if you know your opponent has something dangerous in their hand, you can gamble that they won’t draw something equally good to replace it.

The main attraction of Mishra’s Command is the potential to be a 2-for-1 in terms of damage, being able to kill a creature and a planeswalker in just one card. Just on those axes alone, it’s pretty solid! The other two modes are useful, though, ensuring (if nothing else) you can still cast this with only one thing to kill, and there will be times where a hand refresh or a stat buff will get you there (like alongside Phyrexian Dragon Engine). There’s not a ton of nuance, but there needn’t be; Mishra’s Command is a decently efficient burn spell many decks will find value in.
