Hello Pojo Fans,

Mementotlan Dark Blade is the only monster from the archetype that we are reviewing that is a reliable attacking monster.

Good stats like its vanilla original, Dark Blade is your spot destruction monster: trading a memento card for a Spell/Trap destruction. Getting Memento monsters in the grave is what the archetype is built around, and placing something small in the grave like Mementolan Mace or Goblin will set up a Special Summon of them from the graveyard through Angewitch. Dark Blade clears the path for anything that could stop your Mementoal Tecuhtlica – Combined Creation from being outed easily.

All Memento monsters have a pop ability involving the archetype, and Dark Blade isn’t any different. Trade a Memento monster on the field to Special Summon a Level 3 or lower Memento from the Deck is the perfect compliment to get that final Monster to the field that will enable your Mementoal Tecuhtlica – Combined Creation Special Summon. Dark Blade is your strongest Normal Summon monster, but you can trade itself for Witch, who can trade herself for Goblin, who can trade itself for two Foolish Burials of Memento monsters, which would give you the five Memento monsters you need for Mementoal Tecuhtlica – Combined Creation.

Mementolan Dark Blade makes great use of duplicate monsters in your hand to help clear the path of anything that could stop your Mementoal Tecuhtlica – Combined Creation when it hits the field. It also continues the chain of getting Memento monsters into the grave to facilitate that Special Summon. This archetype would be ruined if the destruction abilities these monsters possess had to be “another Mementolan monster”. Trading itself for its effect is what makes this archetype viable.

We got a retrain of a monster with respectable stats this time, and a fairly iconic Warrior monster, with Mementotlan Dark Blade.

Dark Blade is a Level 4 DARK Warrior with 1800 ATK and 1500 DEF. Pretty good stats, and DARK/Warrior is great. Anyways, on Normal or Special Summon, you can discard a Memento card to target a Spell/Trap the opponent controls and destroy it. If the opponent has some backrow that’s seemed ominous, you can use this effect and get a Memento name in grave, but you probably won’t do this that often, nor is it the reason you play it. You play it for the second effect to destroy a Memento monster you control to summon a Level 3 or lower Memento from Deck, getting you to Angwitch or Mace for searchers, Goblin for double dumping from Deck, and Attic Ghost for graveyard recovery, all while getting this or another Memento in grave for a name. It’s basically an archetypal Lonefire Blossom that summons any Memento you might want to summon as quickly as possible besides Tatsunootoshigo, which could be searched and summoned from hand easily. Hard once per turn, but it’s one of the only other real consistency pieces that Memento have to get to their main playmakers. It’s still not that insane of a Deck with all this consistency we’ve seen, since the payoff seems rather weak, but you play 3 of this for the archetype.

Today’s card is none other than Mementotlan Dark Blade, the last to be revealed that we thought would save the deck, but unfortunately wasn’t quite the bombshell card we were expecting. Like the original Dark Blade, it’s a level 4 DARK Warrior monster, giving it natural synergy with DARK Warriors, though it doesn’t really do much outside of Memento decks. Dark Blade shares the original’s stat spread of 1800 attack and 1500 defense, which are both solid for a level 4 monster but ultimately low in the grand scheme of things (considering the boss has 5000 attack).

Dark Blade has two hard once per turn effects, the first triggering if it’s Normal or Special Summoned and letting you discard a Memento card to target and destroy one of your opponent’s Spell/Trap cards on the field. It’s not bad as a boardbreaker and it can help enable combos in the process, though it’s pretty useless going first. Dark Blade’s other effect is much more valuable, letting you destroy a Memento monster you control to Special Summon a level 3 or lower Memento monster from your deck. As a combo starter, you can pull Mementotlan Angwitch from your deck, or if you’ve already started with Angwitch, you can pull out Mementotlan Mace or Goblin. The main downside to using Dark Blade to get to Angwitch is that you can’t use it later, locking you out of accessing Mace or Goblin and getting to your boss or disruptions. Dark Blade is still an excellent combo piece, though it might’ve been a bit better if its first effect had more utility going first.

+Can be a starter in a pinch
+Flexible extender
-First effect is useless on turn 1
-Hurts lines if used as a starter
