Szadek, Lord of Secrets

This creature is Sengir Vampire with a millstone tied around his neck, which makes him a little too expensive to make it in constructed. In limited, however, this is a bomb that can win the game for you. In limited, seven mana for a 5/5 flyer is completely fair. However, the double mana intensity in two different colors makes this card particularly difficult to cast.
Also, the card milling potential of this card is not particularly high. When was the last time you got a bunch of +1/+1 counters on your Sengir Vampire.
Nobody falls for that anymore. This card is good for limited only because a 5/5 flyer can help you win the game.

Szadek, Lord of Secrets

Man, this thing costs seven mana. It's ability is very interesting, but...goodness. I'd expect this to be a very hot card in casual groups. I'd expect even in limited formats this guy might have some uses. Don't expect to see too many copies of this card dominating your front tables in tournaments. It's a very interesting ability, but it's not strong enough to be overly dominant I wouldn't imagine.

Szadek, Lord of Secrets --

I was already worried when I saw the casting cost of this dude. Unimpressive, too much mana, better options in both blue and black, and I don't like mill strategies as they usually wind up failing due to the fact that you aren't really accomplishing much with your spells until way late in the game. I admit it -- I'm biased.

Seriously, just don't play this card. You can do much better. What good is a 10/10 or bigger creature if it can't just smack your opponent?

However, since I have to do three categories, I have to give Szadek a bit higher rating for limited play. Whenever your opponent loses five to ten cards off the top of his or her deck in limited (along with maybe their only bomb), it hurts a lot more than a consistent constructed deck.

Constructed Rating: 2.0
Casual Rating: 2.5
Limited Rating: 3.5

Szadek, Lord of Secrets

Szadek makes your opponent face quite a dilema. It is a huge flyer, so it will be difficult to find something large enough to block and kill it. If they cannot, they can either chump block it, or, if they do not/cannot, then Szadek gets though...not to damage them, but to mill away their deck. And each turn it gets worse, making them mill away a huge portion of their library. It will only take a few hits by this guy to deck your opponent. And of course, it's getting bigger with each player hit. After the first, you can pretty much rule out killing Szadek with direct damage or neg counters, as it will be a 10/10. It only takes 4 hits to completely mill away a 60 card deck. Of course, the casting cost on him is pretty huge. But if you find someway to force it on the board, say, through a reanimation method, yowsa! Szadek is good enough that I'm quite sure players will FIND a way to make that happen. In limited, if you're going Blue Black, you play him if only for the late game.
