In the storyline, Jhoira is one of the multiverse’s most famous immortals, the result of exposure to wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey water when she was a student at the Tolarian Academy. It’s worth noting that that was a time when planeswalkers were immortal by definition, yet she found her own path to that same state despite not having a spark, and outlasted nearly all of them (while being much more interesting than most of them, to boot).

We’ve reviewed this version of Jhoira a handful of times over the years – as a matter of fact, I was here for every single one. I’ve always imagined that her perspective on Dominaria’s evolution would be like the in-universe equivalent of my observations as a player: someone who sometimes watches and sometimes joins in, and who remembers things that some people don’t realize they could or should ask about. If you ever meet me face-to-face, by all means ask.

But one thing that hasn’t changed is how good this card is. Even when Jhoira was first printed, the Time Spiral block had introduced some powerful suspend creatures where you could cheat on the usual formula. For example, two mana gets you a Deep-Sea Kraken much sooner than usual, and she’s also the least mana-intensive way to get four time counters on an Aeon Chronicler. But people soon realized that any big creature was a good target for her abilities, and things got really ridiculous with the rise of the Eldrazi. Other quirky Time Spiral block cards enabled the original drop-Emrakul-on-the-opponent-mid-combat casual strategy, foreshadowing the Tenth Doctor, and I suspect Jhoira’s about to see another spike in demand as the Doctor Who theme decks and their cards start to make their way into the market.

Jhoira’s been a longtime character in the saga of Dominaria, and her original card has long been a fan favorite for being an interesting combo piece for spellslinger decks…or just any deck that wants to cheat on mana costs. Spend two mana and wait four turns, and you get any spell from your hand. There are no limits on what you can get this way, so you can just go for smaller spells…or Eldrazi. Eldrazi are fun.

A three-mana 2/2 is a bit of a fraught proposition, though, and Jhoira of the Ghitu has long been confined to being a casual favorite. She has some promise, and setting up a big turn to pay off with things like storm or just whatever you’re interested in is worthwhile…but, again, this takes time, and time is a commodity you’re often starved for in competitive. There are ways to speed things up (like time travel, which unfortunately is limited to Legacy/Vintage), but still, you need to give her space and time to set up her explosive turns.

Constructed: 2.25
Casual: 4.5
Limited: 4 (can definitely shine if you protect her)
Multiplayer: 3.5
Commander [EDH]: 4
