The prospect of getting your opponent’s best card basically whenever you want it is pretty tempting, in whatever form it takes. It’s worth noting that the opponent does get their card back if they get rid of the Hostage Taker before you cast it – but not after you cast it. You may not always be able to arrange it in time, of course, but when you do, it’s going to be spectacular. Of course, it’s greatly helped by the fact that you don’t have to have a native ability to generate mana of the stolen card’s colors. The prospect of being able to make a deck based around casting its opponents’ spells but that doesn’t have to devote space to other colors of mana is genuinely fascinating.

Yar har fiddle dee, Hostage Taker is alright with me. This card has a pretty cool ability that combines Oblivion Ring with Mind Control. Even if you don’t get around to casting the exiled card, just being able to remove your opponent’s biggest threat is pretty good. In limited,  Kitesail Freebooter synergizes well with Hostage Taker as they help protect each other. I can see this card becoming popular in multiplayer as she creates some interesting table politics, especially when you commandeer a commander. It should be noted that Hostage Taker has received errata to make it so she can’t target herself and create an infinite loop. Overall Hostage Taker is a flavorful control card that can fit into most decks.
