Ramirez DePietro was, of course, a figure from Dominaria’s distant history. His original Legends card is memorable and eye-catching, though perhaps rather straightforward and not always very exciting. Now that he’s returned as a ghost, that issue has more or less been solved. His evasion ability looks conditional, but you’ll be glad to have it when your opponent has a lot of big flying creatures that would otherwise hold him back. And the way he returns cards from graveyards is a fun ability to build around in your own strategy (cycling, self-mill, looter effects, etc) and can also be used politically – that’s important in some Commander metagames, but Battlebond may also have inspired some of you to try out Two-Headed Giant again.

A bit of an interesting twist to the set, Ghost of Ramirez DePietro is an interesting homage to one of the Legends legends. He’s an interesting little value engine of a creature, able to slip past creatures he’s unable to kill and pillage recently-binned cards out of graveyards for future use, reuse, or abuse. A flexible mana cost is certainly an asset, and being a member of two good tribes is also nice; partner gives him some legs as a commander as well, as he’s a smidge weak to just be alone. I think he’s not quite there in Legacy, but there are fun tricks to be done with the spectral buccaneer in more fun environments.

Constructed: 1.75
Casual: 3.5
Limited: 3.75 (recycling can be especially strong)
Multiplayer: 3
Commander: 3.25
