Hello Pojo Fans,

Full Armored Black Ray Lancer is our Throwback Thursday choice this week and is another two Levels higher than the previous Xyz Monster we reviewed…so here comes some more Xyz climbing.

You’re not going to use three WATER monsters that are all Level 4 even if your deck is geared towards that because your three WATER monsters that are Level 4 likely have more ATK combined than Black Ray Lancer, summon this via a Rank 3 WATER Xyz Monster you control, as long as it has no materials. Of the Rank 3 WATER monsters out there, you’ve got two oldies in Number 17: Leviathan Dragon, Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction, and of course Xyz Armor Torpedo who started our week as the best targets for this. The no materials clause works out even more for using Torpedo to Xyz climb into this because you’ll be using those materials up to get your draw. Once on the field, Full Armored Black Ray Lancer gets an ATK boost that won’t really matter. 200ATK for each attached material isn’t anything. Low ATK for a Rank 4, but if you were to destroy a monster in battle you get a free Spell/Trap destruction each time. If you were to have material(s) attached to Black Ray Lancer, you do get destruction protection at the cost of all materials.

With its low ATK and DEF, if you want the most out of its destruction power you’ll have to equip it with stuff. This is where Full-Armor Xyz and Armored Xyz come into play. Equipping Torpedo to Black Ray Lancer through Armored Xyz gives it a 400ATK boost and turns on all the protection power of Torpedo. Using Full-Armored Xyz in the grave to do this will double the ATK of Black Ray Lancer and give it another layer of destruction protection. If using Armored Xyz, you can send whatever you attach with it to the grave at the end of the Damage Step to get another attack in, and get another Spell/Trap destruction or a direct attack. Once again, it matters what monster you equip using these two cards because you don’t want to attach the wrong one and lose out on anything.

Lower ATK for a Rank 4, but can be made pretty easily in the Armored Xyz archetype. Spell/Trap destruction is good and this archetype loves to attack. This card’s success hinges on using the two Armored Xyz Spell/Trap cards we’ve talked about to give it the best chance at doing the most damage.

Throwback Thursday this week brings us to one of the Full Armored Xyzs we got a few years ago in Duelist Saga, and it might as well be the one closely associated with Shark himself: Full Armored Black Ray Lancer.

FABRL is a Rank 4 WATER Beast-Warrior Xyz with 2100 ATK and 600 DEF. Fine stats for a Rank 4, WATER is always solid, and Beast-Warrior is fine. Materials are any 3 Level 4 WATER monsters, which you aren’t doing. Instead you’ll likely summon this with a Rank 3 WATER Xyz Monster with no material. The no material part is specific, but not impossible since you shouldn’t have any issue detaching materials from your Xyzs or just summoning one off of Bahamut Shark. Funny you can’t use the original Black Ray Lancer to summon this since it’s a DARK monster. Anyways, gains 200 ATK for each material attached to it, which will likely at most only ever be 1, so 2300 ATK is fine. If this card on the field would be destroyed by battle or card effect, you can detach all materials from this card instead, serving as solid protection. Finally, when it destroys an opponent’s monsters in battle, you can destroy a Spell/Trap they control as well. Fine MST effect, though would have been better as a detach effect instead of needing to destroy a monster in battle. Overall it’s an alright card. Like I said, Bahamut Shark can help bring this out by putting a Rank 3 WATER on field, which in turn lets you use Bahamut and this to make Number F0, but it’s kind of redundant in the TCG where Toadally Awesome is legal. It’s a card with some use still, play by preference.

Unsurprisingly, this week’s Throwback Thursday is Full Armored Black Ray Lancer, a Rank 4 WATER Beast-Warrior Xyz monster. It requires a hefty 3 level 4 WATER monsters, which isn’t hard in Shark decks, but outside of them it’s a tall order (there’s a much easier way to make it anyway). It packs an average attack stat of 2100 (and more!), though much like Xyz Armor Torpedo, its defense stat of 600 is painfully low for a Rank 4 of this caliber.

As usual for Armored’s gimmick, you can Xyz Summon Lancer with a Rank 3 WATER Xyz monster as long as it has no Xyz materials. Torpedo will graciously burn through both of its materials for the draw effect, so ranking up into Lancer should be trivial. Lancer gains 200 attack for each of its Xyz materials, so while making it the old-fashioned way will give it a solid 2700 attack, that’s nowhere near worth the materials; realistically, you’ll only be looking at a measly 2300 from Torpedo as a material. Lancer has two other oddly non-once per turn effects, though neither are useful enough to go out of your way to abuse. Lancer can save itself from being destroyed by battle or card effect by detaching all of its Xyz materials. Why all materials, I don’t know, either way, only count on it saving itself once (and falling back to 2100 attack in the process). Finally, when Lancer destroys a monster by battle, you can target and destroy one of your opponent’s Spells or Traps. It’s not the worst effect, but why tie backrow removal to the Battle Phase? Lancer is overall extremely antiquated, but it does have once purpose; it can rank up into Xyz Armor Fortress to provide 2 Xyz materials, letting you search twice using Fortress. It’s not a game-changer, considering you only really need Full-Armored Xyz, though decks focused on Armored might want to do it.

+Can give more value to Xyz Armor Fortress
-Effects are largely pointless
-Unnecessary ladder if you only need to search once
