My first encounter with Fallen Angel was just after Chronicles came out, and it was pretty mind-blowing at the time. Remember, the card pool was much smaller then, so a lot of us weren’t used to creatures with repeatable abilities as powerful as her sacrifice ability, or the way it makes combat very unpredictable, or with the way it creates synergy with unexpected cards. (Breeding Pit immediately became good for something other than Lord of the Pit!) All of those things are still true about her now; while there are cheaper and faster ways to get those benefits in tournament play (Nantuko Husk and Bloodthrone Vampire both have more recent competitive credentials), Fallen Angel hits very hard in casual play. There also aren’t very many black Angels, which makes for interesting theme-based or flavor-based choices (though the question of how well she goes with Kaldheim‘s black valkyries is a subjective one).

Fallen Angel may not be as iconic as Serra Angel, but it’s just as good at ending games if you have the creatures to part with. A +2/+1 boost is enough to present quite a clock, and an evasive one makes for a lot of fun if you can fuel it. She doesn’t resist much removal, but she’s a massive threat in Limited and can function if you’d like a sacrifice outlet with upside; her time has come and gone, but there are worse cards you can play in a pinch.

Constructed: 2 (it is Modern-legal, but it’s too slow at ending games)
Casual: 4.5
Limited: 5
Multiplayer: 3
Commander: 3.5

Fallen Angel

One point in Magic’s history this was a good card. Now, much like Serra Angel, this card has been reverted to the uncommon slot in the famous reprint sets. Five mana for a 3/3 flying that has an ability of “Sacrifice a creature: Fallen Angel gets +2/+1 until end of turn” which is a fine ability but nothing breathtaking compared to creatures of today. I don’t think this card has a home outside of some limited format, even in commander it would be hard to throw this in, in a non-Angel specific deck. When I would pull this card while cracking 7th Edition booster packs I would be thrilled! This was Serra Angel’s counterpart…and now it’s below meh status which is unfortunate but this is a great example of how the times have changed over the course of Magic the Gathering’s rich history.
