Like many cards from Time Spiral, Endrek Sahr is a historical reference – his name first appeared in flavor text from Fallen Empires and little was known about him, other than that he was a thrull breeder for the Order of the Ebon Hand and they considered his experiments to be failures. His card certainly delivers on that, with the swarm of tokens for doing what decks presumably want to do anyway. He’s probably a little less versatile than other cards you would describe that way – his built-in limit makes him surprisingly frail in a long game, even assuming he’s not targeted by the opponent. If you want to keep getting tokens, you really need some kind of sacrifice effect, and while that’s easy enough in black, you do have to keep it mind when building your deck.

It’s maybe unfortunate that a character known from famous flavor text has no flavor text of his own, but his game text kind of doubles as that: it’s known that the thrulls he created overwhelmed the orcs and goblins that destroyed Icatia, and are now the dominant species on Sarpadia along with thallids.

Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder is an interesting enough creature, running a surreptitious Thrull breeding program until things go wrong and they consume him. Getting a slew of 1/1 bodies on top of any creature spells is an interesting bit of incremental value that can pay off well with sacrifice outlets, though you always want to be mindful that you don’t have too many Thrulls. It’s an interesting engine piece if you have the means to take advantage of them, but as a 2/2 for five with no abilities not related to Thrulls, Endrek Sahr is not likely to survive too long in Constructed.

Constructed: 1.25 (way too janky and slow for Modern and deeper formats)
Casual: 4
Limited: 3.5
Multiplayer: 3
Commander [EDH]: 3.75
