Elegy Acolyte seems to be doing two things, though there is a bit of connective tissue between the two. On one hand, it’s there to raise an army of Robots; on the other, it wants to draw lots of cards. They both pair decently, since the card draw happens when things connect (and so this pairs quite well with first and double strike), and the army appears at the end of turn. It does several things decently, and when paired with an acceptable body, this can definitely help a deck keep the engines going as the game goes long.

This looks like one of those creatures that will probably not be noticed a lot, but does everything it’s supposed to do and does it really well. He gains you life while drawing you cards (and life is a resource, especially in black) and on top of that he makes you an army of Robots.

A creature so packed full of abilities reminds me of Aclazotz. It makes an immediate impact, whether it is because you’re warping creatures to make tokens or because you’re drawing yourself an extra card every turn, it just does everything it has to do.

It’s already making waves in Standard, as part of Golgari Aggro decks. I can’t wait to see what more this disciple has in store for us.

This card was made to impact tables. You don’t get a degree in game design, put all that text in something’s box, and then add super-efficient stats on top of that, when you expect something to be played at pre-releases and not much beyond that. Its wording is also intentionally broad, letting you pull in cards from sacrifice and flicker themes if you want to; and also working if you just want to beat down with the expectation that some of your creatures will inevitably get blocked or removed. Yet of all the thousands of cards in Magic that it undoubtedly goes with, the first thing that came to my mind was ninjas. After all, they tend to hit people unexpectedly, and their entire mechanic involves cards leaving play. That’s just me, though – you can’t really go wrong with game text like this.
