Drytron Alpha Thuban

Drytron Alpha Thuban – #GEIM-EN024

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned with the effect of a “Drytron” card. You can Tribute 1 other “Drytron” monster, or 1 Ritual Monster, from your hand or field; Special Summon this card from your hand or GY in Defense Position, then you can add 1 Ritual Monster from your Deck to your hand. You cannot Special Summon monsters, except monsters that cannot be Normal Summoned/Set, the turn you activate this effect. You can only use this effect of “Drytron Alpha Thuban” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Drytron week is here and it begins with Drytron Alpha Thuban.

The return of Mystic Piper? Maybe. All Main Deck Drytron cards have the same effects with the exception of each having an effect to gain advantage for their player. Thuban when Special Summoned will recruit a Ritual Monster from your deck to your hand. All Drytron lock you out of Special Summoning except with monsters like them that “Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set”. Drytron are meant to cycle through one another each once per turn to get you to your Ritual Monsters and Special Summon them. It’s good that they have to summon in defense because a Level 1 with 2000ATK would be an OTK dream even with the summon restriction. Drytron Nova can Special Summon any of the Drytron from the deck, while Cyber Emergency can recruit one from the deck to the hand so you can begin cycling. The added benefit of being able to use Ritual Monsters as tribute fodder for the Drytron summons works with Cyber Angel Ritual monsters that give you advantage of being in the grave or tributed. While different situations will benefit from other Dryton monsters, Thuban will always be handy, as it will fuel another Drytron summon by recruiting the Ritual Monster, then that Ritual Monster will benefit off being tributed (or summoned).

Ritual-based strategy that isn’t Nekroz in 2021, didn’t see it coming.

We saw Magistus, we saw Evil Twins, so the logical conclusion for Genesis Impact was going to be Drytron, which has proven to be the best of the three archetypes in the set. We start the week with one of the best Drytrons you have access to: Drytron Alpha Thuban.

Alpha Thuban is a Level 1 LIGHT Machine with 2000 ATK and 0 DEF. Stats are the most obvious “you cannot Normal Summon/Set this card” as possible, though they are good, and it also has LIGHT and Machine going for it. Like I said, it cannot be Normal Summoned or Set and must be Special Summoned off any Dyrtron card, which is going to be achievable off its own effect, Gamma Eltanin, or Drytron Nova. Its own effect lets you tribute any Drytron or Ritual Monster from your hand or field to Special Summon this from the hand or graveyard in Defense Position, and once summoned off its own effect, you can search for any Ritual Monster from the Deck, but you can only Special Summon Monsters that cannot be Normal Summoned or Set the turn you use this effect. Searching for any Ritual Monster is insane and the cost to summon this is almost irrelevant since Drytrons can revive themselves, the Ritual Spell can summon Rituals from grave, and tributing a Cyber Angel Benten gets you a search. The fact this also accesses any Ritual can make for an insane toolbox for Drytron to access like the Heralds, Nekroz of Trishula, Amorphactor Pain, etc. The restriction is irrelevant really considering you’re using a Ritual Deck and a lot of Drytrons, which all cannot be Normal Summoned, and of course the entire Extra Deck can’t be Normal Summoned. This means the only Normal Summonable Monsters you’re using are likely those you only want to Normal Summon or hand traps. The revival on Alpha Thuban is a hard once per turn, just like all the other Drytrons, so you can’t just keep cycling names and generating advantage. Either way, Drytron Alpha Thuban allows Drytron to get creative on what Rituals you could potentially run in the archetype while also helping get combos going to begin with. If any Drytron name is going to be a 3-of, it’s Alpha.

Art: 4/5 Space Mechs are kinda cool, love the lore of this archetype being based on the Draco constellation.

Drytron week is upon us, beginning with Alpha Thuban.  So as you may or may not be aware, all the cards in this Theme, in the Level 1 Category, and each has 2000 attack and 0 defense.  Light/Machine is a delicious mix, and 2000 attack on a Level 1 is rather tantilizing as well.  Not being able to be Normal Summoned or Set also fits the bad category, and only being able to Special Summon via an effect of a Theme card can be rough too.  Tributing a Theme or Ritual Monster (oh look Ritual support) from your Hand or Field lets you Special Summon this from your Graveyard in defense position.  Very likely that’s going to be a Theme Monster you Tribute or Discard BUT it can be a Ritual Monster.  You’re not going to want to do that with one you have on the Field, as that’s a gross mismanagement of resources, in my opinion.  But doing so via this effect nets you a Ritual Monster to your Hand from your Deck.  There’s plenty of ways to do this, Monster/Magic/Trap alike, but it’s still nice support for the Theme in the Theme.  You have an odd, yet appropriate Special Summon lock after using that effect, where only ones performed on Monsters who can’t be Normal Summoned/Set can be for the rest of the turn.  It’s a decent, if not quirky little card.  Nothing here is particularly game breaking.  Great attack for its Level, Light/Machine is still amazing, and it helps move things along Ritual wise.

Art:  So Thuban was the Pole Star during the construction of the Pyramids in Egypt.  While faint, it was the Pole Star to become closest to the North Star.  And while this art IS pretty cool, I’m seeing nothing about this name or lore in here, so I’m conflicted.  3.5/5
