Hello Pojo Fans,

Chimera Fusion starts our week looking at two retrains of some of Yugi’s iconic monsters during Battle City.

Quick-Play Spell that can only be played during the Main Phase…seems pointless to make it a Quick-Play other than making it faster than some negations if you can’t play it in other Phases, but I’ll move past that. Generic Fusion Spell as long as you include a Fiend or Beast monster, making this something you could see play in DDD or Frightfur. Standard Fusion Summon stuff including the required Beast or Fiend monster. Where it shows it belongs to Chimera and those two monsters that make it is in the second effect this card has.

Grave effect that gives you the choice to search or Special Summon for your archetype is a great effect, and using it during either Main Phase and on the same turn this card is activated instead of having to wait is great. Get your Fusion Spell back to play again is pretty good and something we’ve seen fusion spells do now. Special Summon two monsters instead of one from either the Deck or grave is fantastic. Instant Link 2 or another Fusion Summon using those two monsters in this case because they are “Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts” and “Berfomet”. While neither monster is spectacular by any means, it does give you two monsters off banishing one Spell, and can be an Extra Deck play. The catch to either effect is that you need “Chimera the Flying Mythical Beast” on the field or in the grave. Thankfully, all of the new Fusion forms of the original are treated as the original, giving you multiple bodies to fulfill this card’s requirement. Are you running the original forms of Gazelle and Berfomet? Maybe one copy each, as the new retrains are better forms.

Would be nice if this were a Quick-Play Fusion Spell that could activate during ANY Phase rather than just the Main Phase, but the speed is nice. Grave effect is great as long as you have the requisite monster for it, and you will because you have multiple forms that are treated as that same monster. It’s a shame, tomorrow’s monsters aren’t treated as their original forms while in the Deck and/or grave, because that would make this card’s power even better, and would not require you to play at least one of each to maximize this card’s power.

It’s Chimera Week proper now, and it’s best to start things off with the card that makes things go round with this theme modernizing Yugi’s classic cards, Chimera Fusion.

Chimera Fusion is a Quick-Play Spell that lets you Fusion Summon any monster from the Extra Deck by using monsters from your hand or field as material, including at least 1 Beast or Fiend monster. Clearly intended to try and make these new Chimera monsters using the retrainted Gazelle or Berfomet. As long as they can be used as Fusion Material, or any Beast/Fiend for that matter, you can make some generic-ish Fusions with this like Guardian Chimera or some of the Albaz Fusions (assuming you hard draw Albaz). The second effect is a graveyard effect to give you an option of two different effects you can pick from only once a turn, either letting you add this card from your graveyard to your hand or banish this card from the graveyard to summon a classic Berfomet and Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts from your Deck and/or graveyard. Being able to recover this card first off is nice, considering you aren’t limited to once a turn when it comes to using it to Fusion Summon. The second effect could be nice if it wasn’t for the fact of how badly you wouldn’t want to draw vanilla Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts or Berfomet since they do nothing compared to the new versions. You mainly only use the first effect and never consider running the old monsters unless you really want to, and I honestly mean REALLY want to. Chimera Fusion is a pretty solid Fusion Spell. Highly searchable in the theme and without outside support cards that can search the classic Fusion cards. Play 3 in the Deck to get to your Fusions as fast as possible.

Advanced Rating: 3.5/5

Art: 3/5 It’s a swirl with Gazelle and Berfomet, not surprising.

This week starts our coverage of the new Chimera series, the other dark horse meta contender from Duelist Nexus. Many of its monsters are Illusion type, but for now our first card is their namesake Fusion Spell, Chimera Fusion, a Quick-Play Spell. As a Fusion card, you can search it through a smorgasbord of ways, but the main way will be through Gazelle the King of Mythical Claws, a future card for this week. Chimera Fusion’s first and primary effect Fusion Summons any Fusion monster from your Extra deck using monsters from your hand or field, with at least one of them being a Beast or Fiend. Gazelle and the other playmaker, Big-Winged Berfomet, both fulfill that condition all by themselves through the bread and butter combos. While you can make a lot of things, usually you’ll make Chimera the King of Phantom Beasts for a hand rip or their upcoming alternative Fusion as an extender. Your first Fusion will usually just be to trigger the Graveyard effects of Berfomet and Gazelle anyway, generating a lot of advantage as you combo. Chimera Fusion’s other effect is a hard once per turn, letting you either recycle it back to your hand from the Graveyard or banish it to Special Summon the original Gazelle and Berfomet from your deck or Graveyard. Outside of casual builds running the originals, there’s basically no reason not to use the first effect; you can capitalize on Chimera Fusion not being once per turn to Fusion climb into the archetype’s boss, or set it to prepare a Quick Fusion into Guardian Chimera for disruption and additional advantage. Chimera couldn’t ask for a more powerful combo tool, and despite being searchable, some decks run two or even three copies just in case Berfomet or Mirror Swordknight are negated.

Advanced: 4/5

Art: 3/5 A little basic, but it’s nice to see Gazelle and Berfomet get some attention.
