I’d like to believe that Bruvac’s simple, to-the-point flavor text was inspired by one of the most famous Ravnica cards: Doubling Season. I’d really like to believe it. He does only one thing, and it’s something that most decks don’t really care about, but the decks that do care . . . well, a lot of them kind of need it. Mill is often just too slow a strategy to have any impact before an opponent (or worse, three opponents) realize what’s happening and beat you down with creatures, even when you’re hitting people with things like Traumatize. Bruvac gives dedicated mill decks a fighting chance, and while he’s still just a little too slow for the tournament formats, he makes the archetype a much more relevant force in casual Magic.

Mill has long been a fan-favorite archetype, and Bruvac the Grandiloquent is a simple, elegant way to multiply your mill. Notably, he pairs up very nicely with a spell like Traumatize, which will, indeed, nuke an opponent’s library with a single cast of the latter. Even beyond that, though, doubling things like Tome Scour can do a surprising amount of damage for a low price…though note that it has to specifically be a mill keyword, so things that exile intrinsically (like Tasha’s Hideous Laughter) won’t benefit from Bruvac.

Bruvac is a force multiplier of sorts, though, and he’s not going to win the game on his own as a 1/4 who has no protection and no milling abilities on his own. He’s potent if built around, even in a mono-blue shell, but be mindful of the limitations of both mill and his skillset.

Constructed: 1.5 (mill has never worked well in Legacy, outside of Grindstone-based shenanigans, and Bruvac the Grandiloquent is not legal in Modern)
Casual: 4.25
Limited: 2.25 (he can be built around, but you’re basically relying on Persistent Petitioners to come together, which is a very narrow deck)
Multiplayer: 3.5
Commander [EDH]: 4 (mill is a bit of a high-risk strategy, but it also is quite high reward if you pla carefully)
