Ancient Gear Statue – #MZTM-EN045

If your opponent controls more monsters than you do, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). You can only Special Summon “Ancient Gear Statue” once per turn this way. You can Tribute this card; Special Summon from your hand or Deck, 1 “Ancient Gear Golem” or 1 monster that mentions it, except “Ancient Gear Statue”, ignoring its Summoning conditions. You can only use this effect of “Ancient Gear Statue” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Maze of the Master Week on CoTD, and we start off with some Ancient Gear support in the same of Ancient Gear Statue.

Machine Level 2 with under 500ATK isn’t anything new for the archetype or Machine-Type monsters in general and does lend it Machine Duplication support. Special Summon ability if your opponent controls more monsters than you, but that is only a once per turn, that is okay. Had this effect been if you control no monsters as well it i would be a nice starting first card, but at least you’ve got some Special Summon power for recovering.

Tribute Gear Statue for an Ancient Gear Golem or a monster that mentions it from the Deck or hand with those magnificent words attached: “ignoring its Summoning conditions”. It is expected that Ancient Gear Golem will always be involved somehow in new support as it was the sire of the archetype long ago in the GX days and it would be counterproductive to make new support that shuns it or doesn’t work increasingly well with it…and that involves ignoring Golem’s restrictions.

Ancient Gear Tanker can Special Summon Golem from the hand this same way, or from the grave if your opponent has a monster, which they will if you Special Summon Gear Statue using its ability, Tanker would also give Golem an additional 600ATK. Doing it this way would be simply a deck thin move. Ancient Gear Frame can take is a step further by searching Ancient Gear Golem or a Spell/Trap for your Ancient Gear archetype via discarding. Need that Ancient Gear Fusion? Boom! There you go. Ancient Gear Commander can Foolish Burial Ancient Gear Golem to Normal Summon another Ancient Gear monster, setting up a Link-2 or Rank 4 summon. In this case, Ancient Gear Ballista would be your Link Summon and get you an Ancient Gear monster or Geartown from the Deck. Ballista could destroy your Geartown, make your opponent’s ATK/DEF 0, then get a Special Summon off Geartown…but we’re getting pretty far from Gear Statue.

TLDR: Ancient Gear Statue can get you directly to Ancient Gear Golem or to a setup piece that will thin your Deck and still get you to an Ancient Gear Golem or version of it. Ancient Gear Dark Golem may be the best choice as it mentions Ancient Gear Golem in the text (becoming it on the field and in the Graveyard) and gets you two cards from the Deck for the price of one (discard). If you do summon that choice, set your Spell/Trap cards before, as it prevents you after its effect. Ancient Gear Statue adds some more speed to get to the theme monster of the archetype as well as the pieces around it. A card to run in a set in the archetype because you won’t be short of monsters to search off of it.

Final week of looking at Maze of the Master this week as we cover some of the remaining miscellaneous cards from the set, starting with an Ancient Gear card finally coming from the 5D’s anime (weird it wasn’t in GX), Ancient Gear Statue.

Ancient Gear Statue is a Level 2 EARTH Machine with 500 ATK and 800 DEF. Low stats, but that means Machine Duplication, and we always like EARTH Machines. If your opponent controls more monsters than you do, you get to Special Summon this from the hand, which works in a Deck like Ancient Gears since they want to go second and OTK the opponent. You can only summon this once per turn that way, so you can’t just throw all your Statues from your hand onto the field for free. The other effect lets you tribute this card to summon an Ancient Gear Golem or any monster that mentions it from the hand or Deck, ignoring the summoning conditions. So not a full on Lonefire Blossom for the archetype, sadly it cannot summon Ancient Gear Wyvern, but there are still decent options with Commander, Dark Golem, Dragon, Frame, and Tanker (you of course cannot summon another Statue with this). The best target is most likely Dark Golem since you never want to Normal Summon it, so summoning it from the Deck for your Spells and Traps is great, or if you drew Ancient Gear Fusion, you can probably just grab the original Ancient Gear Golem to use the Deck for Fusion Materials. HOPT on this effect, so sadly Machine Duplication doesn’t give maximum synergy to this card like it did in the anime. It’s a nice card for Ancient Gears, making Dark Golem much easier to summon in the Deck and not needing to just hope on Geartown and Ancient Gear Catapult. If you draw multiples, then at worst it’s just another Ancient Gear name to summon any of your Ancient Gear Fusions. Feels like a must for Ancient Gear.

We don’t have much time left before we have to cover Alliance Insight, so we’re leaving behind Maze of the Master with some of the one-off support imports. Ancient Gear Statue starts us off, a level 2 EARTH Machine monster, as expected of an Ancient Gear, which will give it synergy with EARTH Machines as usual. Unlike its high-level brethren, Statue has a measly stat spread of only 500 attack and 800 defense, which is a pretty big indicator that this is strictly a combo piece, not a fighter.

Playing into Ancient Gear’s preference to go second, Statue can Special Summon itself once per turn from your hand as long as your opponent controls more monsters than you. You’ll rarely be able to take advantage of this going first, so you might as well go second so that it’s live. Statue comes with a single hard once per turn effect to tribute itself then Special Summon any Ancient Gear Golem or a monster that mentions it from your hand or deck, except for another Statue, and ignoring summoning conditions in the process. This effect might as well read “summon Ancient Gear Dark Golem”, because that’s what you’ll be summoning 90% of the time given that its double ROTA enables all of your combos. In an emergency, like being forced to go first, you can always just Normal Summon Statue then go into Ancient Gear Dragon; it packs a single Spell/Trap negate so it’s not the most impressive endboard, but it’s better than nothing going first. There’s not much else to say about Statue; it’s a very straightforward starter that helps access Dark Golem and can bait Hand Traps as you attempt to build your board. The deck still pales in comparison to Tenpai, but the added consistency and layer of extension helps at least. Play 3!

+Easy way to access Ancient Gear Dark Golem without eating your Normal Summon
+Can summon Ancient Gear Dragon as an emergency combo going first
-Has to be Normal Summoned most of the time if going first

Art: 3/5 Apparently this is a reference to the first time Ancient Gear Golem was summoned in GX, but my memory isn’t that great…
