Ancient Brass Dragon is perhaps less proactive than the last couple of ancients we looked at – not that its stats don’t make it a threat when you cast it onto an empty table, but it’s hardly unique in that regard, and there are certainly things that are more purely aggressive (even for Commander). It’s perfectly serviceable as a big flier, but if you really want to take advantage of its abilities, you’ll hold it until late enough in the game that lots of interesting things have already died. While the reanimation ability isn’t as reliable as the straight-up return-target-creature spells, it’s still capable of changing a game, and makes for some great stories when you roll a 20 in a situation that lets you steal every creature from everyone’s graveyard at once.

Ancient Brass Dragon is a big, winged reanimation spell, in a sense. A successful swing gets you back a swath of creatures, and considering how quickly that can scale if you return a horde of small creatures, it’s not so bad. Of note is that Ancient Brass Dragon hits all graveyards and not just your own, so you can really tighten the screws with a late-game hit. The challenge will always be to actually swoop successfully in the first place, as the only protection this has is 6 toughness, evasion, and being a color resistant to a good chunk of old removal spells. Like most of the ancient metal dragons, this one can crack a game open, but it takes a bit of set-up to make sure this isn’t just a gratuitous swooping dragon.

Constructed: 1
Casual: 4
Limited: 4.75 (not nearly as back-breaking as the other dragons on its own, but still not to be slept on)
Multiplayer: 4
Commander [EDH]: 4
