Gourgeist

Bit of an interesting Pokémon up for review today. Interesting doesn’t always mean ‘good’, but in this case the designers have come up with a nice card, though whether it can hang with the big boys of the format is open to serious question.

Gourgeist is a low HP Stage 1, but it has two pretty good (and cheap) attacks. Eerie Voice places two damage counters on all your opponent’s Pokémon for just one Psychic Energy, making it the most cost-efficient damage spreader in the game. Problem is that Pokémon have such huge HP nowadays, it would take a lot of Gourgeists to KO anything. You would really need Dusknoir BCR to manipulate that damage with its Sinister Hand Ability, or something that can hit damaged Pokémon especially hard.

Spirit Scream is a little more expensive and it’s an attack that will likely remind veteran players of Weezing DX’s Liability. Basically, it leaves both Active Pokémon with 10 HP left, and this can be turned into a KO easily enough with a Hypnotoxic Laser. It’s a fun attack and could generate some favourable exchanges against EX Pokémon, but even at the cost of two Psychic Energy, it is difficult to swarm with a Pokémon as frail as Gourgeist (being Weak to Dark doesn’t help either).

Gourgeist is a good card, and it’s also a fun card. But this format’s 180 HP OHKO Pokémon have chewed up and spat out many good and fun Pokemon over the last couple of years. I’m afraid that the same fate may await this card.

Rating

Modified: 3 (deserves some casual play at least)

Limited: 3.75 (could be highly effective)

Gourgeist.
Unlimited 150 review.

I’ll just get this out of the way now; Gourgeist is my favourite Gen 6 Pokémon! Its card is actually pretty good too, especially in Standard, making favourable 2 for 1 prize trades with EXs.

In U150 the power-creep fighting rules hurt Gourgeist quite a bit I’m sad to say with its Holo Rare status bumping it up to ex itself. Still, a 2 for 2 trade with another ex isn’t too bad. If there’s an Expert Belt wearing Hydreigon Consuming its way through your team, one Spirit Scream and a Laser (or Skuntank G!) later you’ve 1 hit KO’d one of the best tanks in the game!

Gourgeist’s main competition will be Weezing (Deoxys). Its own Liability attack also puts the opponent on 10HP for just 1 Energy but does 70 damage to its own 70HP instead. Some extra setup such as a Giant Cape is required to allow it to survive the turn but it has the benefit of being a regular Pokémon. Weezing also has a lot more support in its evolution line so Gourgeist will have to wait for some more versions of itself until it can compete on the same level.

It would be a shame to gloss over Eerie Voice though, it’s actually a really good attack in this format! Spread is more viable with more low HP Pokémon seeing play and Gourgeist gets around spread’s worst enemy, Mr.Mime (Plasma Freeze) and his bench shielding Ability. Gourgeist could actually use Eerie Voice as its main asset with Spirit Scream just as an emergency option.

Rating: 3.5 (Can 1 hit KO most things and is actually a really good damage spreader! Hopefully its later versions will also be good and raise its rating!)
