Cadet-Captain Mike

Name:    Executioner (Cursed)

Card:    DJC #010 (Uncommon)

Points:  17

Masts: 4

Cargo: 4

Moves: S+L

Guns : 3S,3L,3L,3S

Hit %: 200 (S), 100 (L)

Link : El Fantasma

Ability: Fear. If this ship has a Captain crew, she gets +1 to her cannon rolls.

For seventeen points, you expect a ship with a lot of power, and hopefully some speed as well. The Executioner does not disappoint.

Four-masted ships with S+L speed have always been rare, and are getting rarer. Her cargo is normal for a ship of her size, and allows you to carry some useful crew (forget gold running with this ship -- it isn't cost-effective). Once she has some kind of Captain crew, her hit percentages rise to 267 / 133. Compare her to the mighty Divine Dragon; the Executioner costs one point more, has the same cargo, is a bit faster, is easier to sink (two fewer cannons), shoots a bit worse at S range, and is a bit better at L range. The Divine Dragon has the Junk keyword; the Executioner has Fear. It's hard to choose between the two.

For crew, you must have some kind of Captain. It was nice of WK to relax the rules on what constitutes a Captain crew, so you can get the Executioner's ability with any crew who gives a move/shoot. Crew #2 should be Cavendish or Tabatha McWarren, so you can add a SAT crew from another faction (the OE Crimson Angel or Montana Mays would both be superb choices). If you're going to spend half your points on one ship, you want that ship moving like the wind and shooting like a Gatling gun.

This will cost you, though; the ship with a minimum effective crew of Captain, Cavendish and Angel costs 28 points. If you're in a death match with plenty of points to spend, the sky's the limit.

Bottom line: this is one of the best gunships you'll find among the Cursed. If you play those fiends often, you'd be well advised to acquire this ship and build a fleet around her. Her only drawback is her cost, but it's a fair fee for a fine fighter.

Draco Starcloud Executioner

Right off the bat I'm going to say I don't like this ship. Maybe you'll like it better once you hear about it, but I don't think it's worth much unless you have no other options.

The Executioner has good stats and a good ability, but one its other ability, its link, and its price more than counter those good qualities.

First off, the stats and the good ability.

The Executioner has a good S+L base move, so you don't need a helmsman. Executioner is a fighting ship though, so if you've got room to spare go for it.

Her cannons are an average staple common among fighting ships: two 3S and two 3L cannons.

The Executioner also has four cargo spaces. The only good about her cost (17 points) is that you can put on some good crew.

The better of the Executioner's two abilities is that she gets +1 to her cannons when there's a captain aboard. Since you'd want the Executioner for her fighting prowess, a captain would already be a must!

Now, her flaws. Her awful, awful flaws.

The Executioner's other ability is Fear. I have never liked Fear because it only has a 33% chance of affecting an enemy and even then you may just cut the enemy's speed instead of deactivating its abilities.

The Executioner links to El Phantasma. The Davy Jones' Curse El Phantasma is, in my opinion, horrible. He gives another +1 against non-Cursed ships, but he also brings a redundant Fear and an unvaluable Reverse-Captain ability for 9 points. He's as overpriced as the Executioner.

Finally, the price. As I mentioned briefly, the Executioner costs 17 points to use. The Cursed have lots of other boats that are much cheaper and are just as, if not more, useful than the Executioner is.

Use the Executioner if you either don't have any other fighting boats or have a lot of points to waste. I can't recommend it in any other situation.

I give the Executioner a 1.5/5.
