Cadet-Captain Mike Name: HMS Plantagenet (English)
Card: SM #ES-015 (Common)
Points: 8

Cargo: 3
Moves: S+L
Guns : 3S, 3S
Hit %: 100 (S), 0 (L)
Ability: This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against Pirate ships.

The Plantagenet's ability makes you think of her as a small fighter. She can certainly play that role, as long as there are Pirates to shoot at.
But you might find that this ship has a hidden talent.

Two 3-rank cannons is okay but not great. If the target is a Pirate, they become 2-rank, and now they're pretty good. But ignore her ability, and suddenly HMS Plantagenet doesn't look like a fighter, but a gold ship, with fine speed, decent cargo, and a low price tag. She'd need no crew at all to do well as a gold runner, although First Mate Ismail would add a cargo space and make her even more effective. As a Pirate fighter, a Captain is all she'd need (but a Musketeer would add a much-needed third cannon).

England needs all the gold ships she can get. This one could get overlooked because her ability doesn't say "gold." But in spite of her warlike appearance, I think the Plantagenet can serve the Crown best by seeking gold and bringing it home.

Goldship rating: 3.3 / 5
Gun Ship rating: 2.7 / 5
Boarding rating: 2.7 / 5
Value for points: 4.3 / 5
Draco Starcloud HMS Plantagenet

In contrast to the HMS Wycliffe, here's a ship that is better at treasure hunting than it is at fighter. She only has two masts though, so she can't complete well in a boarding action. Her small size also extends to her cargo: only three spaces. Her base speed is good though, S+L, so she can run quickly and get small cargos. Her guns are very average, two 3S, though they get a +1 against Pirates, which was good when there were only three factions, but the ability's useless is slightly lessened today.

She only costs 8 points, so if you need a speedy ship to get some leftover treasure, she's a good ship. She's no good on the front lines though, so keep her away.

I give the HMS Plantagenet a 2.5/5.
Vladsimpaler Rounding out English PotSM Week is a ship with an odd and rather long name.

HMS Plantagenet, 8 points, English

Masts: 2

Cargo: 3

Speed: S+L

Cannons: 3S 3S

Abilities: This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against Pirate ships.

Flavor Text: HMS Plantagenet is a small, mercurial ship able to sail in shallow waters and up streams. This pirate hunter is manned exclusively by men who have lost everything to pirates.

Believe it or not, back in the good ol' days when there was only PotSM, this ship was actually used as a treasure runner for England.

Again, when I say that the English can't treasure run out of a paper bag, I mean it. But I'm not just going to rate it on being a treasure runner.

It's not hard to see why this ship sees little use. It's outclassed by the PotCC HMS Alexander, which has one more cargo, and instead of getting +1 vs. Pirates, it gets +1 vs. French. Poor thing, this ship only had one set...and even then, it wasn't used much.

Of course, Pirates are the most popular faction, so this ship will probably have rank 2 cannons against most fleets. But not all fleets.

If you're expecting a Pirate fleet, load this ship up with a Captain, helmsman, and perhaps a Firepot specialist. Although, it is 15 points.

S+L+S speed is good, rank 2 cannon are good, and even if your ship

sinks next turn to the Zeus, at least you got one of its masts on fire.

I don't know, this ship is one of those ships that was outclassed way too early in the game to have gotten a lot of use, so I give this ship average marks: 3/5.
