Keyword: Sea Monster.
Ability: If this sea monster succeeds at a boarding party, it also eliminates one mast.

For anyone who doesn't know, Champ is the American version of the Loch Ness monster, a critter that allegedly swims in the cold waters of Lake Champlain. WizKids wanted to give the Americans a sea monster of some kind, and this is what they came up with.

Speed is average for a ship, a little above average for a sea beastie.
Her "cannons" are reasonable, but sea monsters aren't about shooting, they're about ramming and boarding. This one can take down two masts per turn, one with the ram and the other with her ability, plus killing a crew or removing a treasure, if she wins the board. With only four body sections, picking on big ships isn't in the picture, but there are plenty of 2-masted and 3-masted ships that Champ can wreck.

The one big problem here, a common one with sea monsters, is her high point cost. 17 is excessive for a 4-masted ship that isn't totally extraordinary. The same 17 points would buy my favorite monster, Calim, with worse cannons but the same ability, one more body section, and
S+S+S speed. Or you could buy HMS Titan, one of the best gunships in the
game.

My verdict: if you want to play an all-USA fleet and you want a sea
monster, Champ isn't the worst one out there (Lusca wins that dubious
honor). But she's not a good value for the price.

The sea monsters really didn't get the good end of the pack in Ocean's Edge. Out of all of the sea monsters in the pack, there are only really 3 worth using. And they're all Cursed. Oh well. This sea monster isn't all THAT bad. Comparing it to the DJC Jormungandr, they seem pretty much equal. Masts, points, and abilities are equal. Jormungandr could steal a treasure, while Champ has no cargo. Jormungandr has different cannons, with two more short-range cannons. Champ moves faster. My opinion? Use Champ. He's faster, and has a better chance of gunning them down.

Well, let's look at this thing then. It has so-so cannons, most of them are long-range. It has an up-down keyword, as you could easily use it to your benefit, but it could become harmful. Its ability is a good one -- Two masts with one action and no shooting? That's what I'm talking about. It has a nice move for a sea-monster, only topped by Calim. The no cargo isn't really an issue seeing as you can't use sea-monsters for treasure anyways. The only problem is that it can't carry crew, and it's 17 points. That's a little much for a ship that isn't even going to be your main fighter.

So what can I say? This ship has ups, it has downs, it has in betweens. I like the move complementing the ability, but the point cost is too high. I'd like to have seen it differ a little more from Jormungandr, but there are a lot of ships that are almost the same. This is definitely not the best American fighter, or boarder for that matter. However, for high-point battles, it could easily find a way into the spot. I give this ship/sea-monster a 3 out of 5. Pretty generous if you ask me.
