U.S. Dragon Ball Z - Episode Summaries

Episode 8 - The Kamehaha Wave

Goku and Chi-Chi finally make it to the Kame House.  However, Chi-Chi’s a little skeptical about whether or not that’s Master Roshi, so she throws her helmet blade to see if he could dodge it.  He senses the attack but not soon enough to dodge it.  While Chi-Chi berates him, the Turtle Hermit pulls out his Hermit Club Card as proof.  Chi-Chi apologizes and pulls out the blade from Roshi’s forehead.

Master Roshi then talks to Goku in secret and says that he’ll let the use the Bansho Fan if Bulma can set him up on a date.  Goku agrees, and the master also mentions not to tell Chi-Chi about the deal.  While searching for the Bansho Fan, Turtle mentions that Roshi was last using it as a placemat.  The hermit says that he threw it out because it was sticky from some juice he spilled on it.  Master Roshi then decides to go to Fire Mountain himself to put out the fire.  After calling Baby Gamela, the three were on their way.

Note:  Baby Gamela is a pun for Gamera: a turtle that flies by spinning in a circle while firing rockets to propel itself.  Unfortunately, the dub messed up that pun.

Upon arriving at Fire Mountain, Ox-King rushes to greet his old master, and Roshi immediately falls to the ground (riding around in circles made him dizzy).  After berating Ox-King for killing people over his treasure in his castle, the mighty giant begs for his forgiveness.  Meanwhile, Roshi pulls Goku and Bulma aside and explains the deal he made with Goku.  At first, Bulma gets very mad, but Roshi points out that the Dragon Ball is still inside the castle.  Bulma will only get him a date when the hermit puts out the fire.

After taking off his turtle shell and shirt, Master Roshi starts to bulk up his scrawny body instantly.  Meanwhile, Yamcha and Puar are still staring in awe.  After harnessing his energy and uttering the phrase “Ka-Me-Ha-Me-Ha,” Master Roshi releases the energy towards the castle.  When it was all over, he returns to his normal self, but everyone mentions that even thought the fire’s out, the castle is destroyed as well.  However, Bulma was able to find the Dragon Ball in the rubble.

Master Roshi tells Goku that the Kamehameha Wave took him 50 years to perfect.  However, Goku manages to perform it within 50 seconds (maybe not that long), and destroys the capsule car in the process.  Then, Goku mentions that his wasn’t as powerful as Master Roshi’s.  Master Roshi is dumbfounded, but after Ox-King mentions that he’s the grandson of Gohan, they briefly talk about him.

When Bulma sees that Goku destroyed the car, she became upset, but Ox-King offered the group a jet car to use for a job well done.  However, before Goku, Bulma, and Oolong take off, Master Roshi reminds Bulma about the deal.  Quickly, Bulma pulls Oolong aside and asks him to set Roshi up with one of his friends.  Oolong replies that it’s a no-go and says all of his friends are pigs.  After asking him to get her out of the mess, Oolong changes into Bulma to tell him.  Instead, he tries to set him up with Bulma.  Angrily, Bulma blows off the deal leaving a surprised Master Roshi.

Goku and Chi-Chi talk for a little bit with both asking if they’ll think about each other.  Eventually, the group takes off, and Yamcha and Puar follow in their own air car.

Dragonball
Episode 8: The Kamehameha Wave
U.S. Premiere Airdate: August 29, 2001

Goku and Chi Chi finally arrive on Roshi’s island.

Roshi greets Goku, and mistakes Chi Chi for Bulma.  Chi Chi does not believe that Roshi is who he says he is, being an old man.  She uses her hemet blade and says if it were Roshi, he would dodge it.  The blade hits Roshi right in the head, but doesn’t kill him.  Roshi shows Chi Chi his I.D. to prove it.  He finally gets the blade out.  Goku explains that Ox King wanted the Bancho Fan to clear the fire from Fire Mountain.  Roshi explains that the Bancho fan does three things.

When waved once, it creates a strong gust of wind.  The second time, it creates a rain cloud, and the third time, it creates a heavy rain cloud.  Roshi realizes that he had used the fan for a carpet and had thrown it away, but Roshi offers to push out the flames himself.  But, the turtle hermit first asks Goku to give him a “moonlight stroll” with Bulma.  Turtle says that he can’t have a date because of his code, but Roshi pleads to Goku that it is the last years of his life.  Turtle again ruins his plans by explaining that Roshi drank from the fountain of youth, so he won’t be dying off for some time.  Goku finally agrees to ask her for a walk.  Goku and Chi Chi take the Nimbus cloud to Fire Mountain while Roshi takes a spinning ride to the Mountain.  Everyone finally arrives, and Ox King falls at his feet to Roshi.  Roshi falls in dizziness since his ride almost spun his head off.  Roshi gets up and then shouts at Ox King for attacking people over a stupid treasure.  Ox King begs for forgiveness, and Yamcha watching from behind, can’t believe his eyes.  Roshi tells Ox King to get up.  Before putting out the flames, Goku, Bulma, and Roshi talk behind a wall.  Goku tells Bulma about the deal they made.  Bulma refuses to go out with Roshi.  Roshi says it’s only for a stroll.  Bulma finally agrees, only because he is helping put out the flames.  Roshi gets a boos from Goku up to a wall near the flames.  He suddenly bulges his muscles, and then cups his hands together.  Yamcha explains that the technique is the Kamehameha Wave, which puts all the person’s energy into one light beam.  Roshi uses his attack, and the flames disappear.  Ox King tells Roshi that he destroyed the castle with it, but Roshi says it was a mistake.  Bulma and Oolong head through the rubble to look for the 6th dragonball.  Goku, amazed by the Kamehameha attack asks Roshi to teach him it, but Roshi explains it takes 50 years to learn.  Goku aims at the car he and Bulma are using, and mimics Roshi.  A small blast comes out from his hands, and it totals the car.  Roshi and Ox King are amazed, and Roshi asks Goku where his grandfather is (Roshi believes that Gohan was still alive and training Goku).  Goku explains that he died a long time ago.  Roshi asks Goku to train with him, and Goku says it would be an honor.  Yamcha, from behind, is again amazed, since Roshi has gained a reputation for being very selective of his students.  Bulma and Oolong finally get the 6th dragonball.  As a final favor, Bulma asks Oolong to transform into her and go on the walk with Roshi.  Oolong says he won’t do it, but after the “P Word” is uttered, he finally agrees.  Oolong transforms into the short, fat Bulma he previously did when he met Puar.  Bulma says it looks nothing like her, so Oolong tries again, and this time, he perfectly mimics Bulma.  Bulma (Oolong) goes to Roshi, and just to tick off the real Bulma, Oolong pretends she is in love with Roshi, and asks him to call her.  Bulma comes after Oolong and shouts at him.  She then sees the car and wonders how they are going to get back.  Ox King rewards Goku with a new car, and Goku, Buma, and Oolong head on for the final Dragonball.  Yamcha and Puar head on behind.  With six dragonballs in possesion, there is only one more, but that one is in the hands of Pilaf!  And what better way to find more dragonballs than the Dragonballs coming to you?

Dragonball Race:

Bulma/Goku/Oolong: 6 Dragonballs

Emperor Pilaf: 1 Dragonball

Yamcha/Puar: 0 Dragonballs
