Killer Deck Reports - May 2001

As the 'Krow Flies
by Mark S Dawson
May 12, 2001 (Happy Mothers Day to all the Moms out there)
at Let the Games Begin
Greenville SC
13 participants
3 round Swiss ; top 4 make playoffs

I almost called this a Ghoulash deck cause I was spent coming up with a new idea and just decided to throw some cards together I liked. If the deck has any strategy it is Chaos Gym and low retreat to allow me to set up matchups that I want. I like Murkrow, Gligar and Ditto ( a card I love but have not used lately) and Skarmory was just something to take out for a test drive. My trainers are all STS compliant and I wanted to do that cause I think the 'lost' trainers are the key in the new format. I like Chaos and this helped set me up on level ground trainer-wise because it made them to not be able to use their trainers as easily.

The Deck
3 Murkrow
2 Ditto
3 Gligar
2 Cleffa
2 Skarmory

1 Recycle Energy

1st round V. Scotty
I remember so little. I think Scotty was playing alot of water. I was up comfortably in both games and then played the Chaos Gym. That more or less sealed any chances of a comeback. I picked up two wins even though Scotty played so well.

Record 2-0

2nd round V. Jessie
Jessie is a friend if my son's. He played OK, but he had a good bit of Psychic so my Murkrows kicked him around a bit. It was not fair since I had the big resistance advantage and when he tried playing anything else it was all colorless so my Gligar had a field day with the Tuffs and Chansey. Sometimes you just end up with those type of matchups.

Record 4-0

3rd round V. Guy
Guy is my boy. We were both 4-0. He had a good deck but Chaos really hamstrung him. He could not get to his Arcanines and my Ditto was taking care of his Sneasels. In fact , I won the second game because I was able to play Darks on my Ditto to help combat Sneasel. The Chaos kept him from getting his Arcanine and Dark Energy and that was the whole focus of his deck. Growlithe can only do so much and Sneasel is not half as scary when she can only do Fury Swipe.

Record 6-0

I made the playoffs along with Ben , James and andrew.
I was paired up for a single elimination with James.
This started out bad for me as he was playing Erikas Jigglypuff and already had the DCE. But I had Gligar. The difference being that he kept scooping or berrying 'Puff. I thought I was dead but I pulled a Cleffa and Eeeeeeeked. That left me with a good hand including Chaos. Next turn I played Chaos and set up. That is when James STOPPED drawing good cards and that was a shame. James played well and was beat by bad luck.

Meaning that I moved on to the Finals against Ben or andrew.
Ben won. That is UNbelievable. andrew must have had a very bad day because he would not be able to go for his second 1st place finish in , what... a dozen tries. This was amazing. Me and Ben had to take a coupla minutes before we played a two-outta-three Final because we were so choked up about the prospect of getting a shot at first place on the very day that andrew happened to come. I am so glad I did not pick up my cards and leave when he first showed up like I was going to do.

FINALS
I won game 1 in OK shape. I admit I was shocked. AT LtGB, they do not come better than Ben. He was playing Sneasel, Skarmory, Steelix, and Erika's 'Puff. I just know in Game 1 that I got the Chaos early and was up by a good number of prizes and Ben had to burn through his deck, as he was winning card-drawing trainer flips but losing the Plus Power/Energy Retreival/Gold Berry flips. That was actually very lucky for me.

Game 2 was odd. I got out the early Chaos but he played No Removal Gym right after and I did not pull another Chaos until VERY late in the game. But what won me this game was that I NEVER wanted for cards. If I needed a Berry I got it. If I needed Metal Energy it was there. ben on the other hand could not get what he wanted. Case in Point:

The game coulda turned when he had an Erika's Jigglypuff out against my undamaged Ditto that had a DCE and a Metal on it. He attached two plus powers and then Oaked. He did not get his necessary DCE but he got an Elm. So he Elmed and STILL did not get the DCE. So what happened was that he wasted an Oak and Elm and the 2 Plus Powers and did no damage to me.

That was about the game there as I was able to kill 'Puff and that gave me a 2 prize card lead as he was running low on cards and I was finally able to get the Chaos out. That was a big turn and I lucked up.

It was a good day as I was able to go 9-0 and got $13 in store credit. I am going to buy my kids a game and put the rest with what I have already saved up and get Neo2 in June. Or is it July?
